2010, 2011 & 2012 RAM 2500/3500 6.7L Diesel with K&N Air Intake System Gets Serious HP Boost
- 11 May 2016
By Dodge's declaration, when it spun RAM Trucks into its own division in 2010, the fourth-generation 2500 and 3500 model pickups were intended for serious customers and mid- to heavy-weight commercial use. Some were still badged Dodge RAM, and sold as such in addition to the RAM. Standard power was the 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel with a six-speed manual transmission. The optional 6-speed automatic had 150 lb-ft more torque and was immediately popular. Their new look borrowed heavily from long-haul tractors, which also boosted their appeal. Chassis cabs were available for custom beds in the 3500, and regular cab, crew cab, and mega cabs were available for both the 2500 and 3500 models. The cherry on top was the Heavy Duty model receiving Motor Trend magazine's 2010 Truck of the Year award. The bottom line became: if you're a real trucker, not an enthusiast/recreational weekender, you have a diesel RAM. Period. A RAM with the 6.7L inline-6 turbocharged Cummins diesel engine generates 350hp and 800lb-ft of torque. You can haul up to 3,100 lb, tow up to 15,000 lb, and traverse tough terrain. If you have a 3500, you also have an engine brake (cylinder compression-release) to announce your arrival upon deceleration. You don't mess around.
A large-displacement, turbocharged engine is essentially a giant air pump, and making the extra effort to reduce restriction in the induction system will help improve airflow, and enhance performance. And for the 2010-2012 model year 2500s and 3500s, owners now have the opportunity to give this hard-working power plant the advantage of more power and better air induction with the new K&N 57-1562 performance air intake system. The K&N 57-1562 air intake system for these specific 2010-1012 models replaces the factory air intake housing with a custom air box housing. A K&N diesel air intake kit will significantly reduce intake tract restriction and enable an engine to breathe easier; resulting in more power. It incorporates a large, oversized conical-shaped, high-flow, oiled-cotton air filter, which is then attached to a rotationally molded tube made from interlaced high density polyethylene (HDPE). This roto-molded manufacturing method allows the tube to be precisely shaped for turbulence reduction and airflow acceleration, and to fit precisely into the vehicle's engine compartment while still using factory holes and mounting points. The uniquely shaped air box pulls cooler, outside air, near the bumper, into the custom molded intake for a guaranteed increase in horsepower. This new system will improve engine sound and the tube accommodates the factory mass airflow sensor and air temperature sensor.
K&N dynamometer tests using a stock 2011 Dodge RAM 2500, with the Cummins 6.7 running at 2919 rpm in third gear, showed an estimated increase of 8.2 horsepower and 12.8 lb-ft of torque. Consistent with K&N's engineering and manufacturing philosophy, the oversized cone shaped cotton gauze air filter is washable, reusable, and can be in place for up to 100,000 miles before servicing, depending on driving conditions. It can easily be washed more frequently if needed, and K&N provides a cleaning care kit for that. Also, the 57-1562 intake is relatively easy to install using basic hand tools, and is backed by K&N’s 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty. The following Dodge RAM and RAM pickups can be fitted with the K&N 57-1562 Performance Intake Kit: 2012 RAM 3500 6.7L L6 Diesel You can view all the air intakes that K&N makes for these vehicles at the Air Intake Systems for the RAM 2500 and Air Intake Systems for the RAM 3500 pages and all the air filters at the Air Filters for the RAM 2500 and Air Filters for the RAM 3500 pages.
