2015-2016 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 Gets an Increase Power with K&N Typhoon Intake
- 23 Feb 2016
From movies and TV shows, to college campuses and church parking lots, the Ford Mustang has become so ingrained in American culture that even non-car people can pick one out of a lineup. The all new for 2015 6th-Gen 2015-2016 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 brings this iconic muscle car into the 21st century, with a host of modern amenities like a fully independent suspension, loads of electronic driver aides, and a revised version of the Coyote 5.0L V8. With 435-hp and 400 lb-ft of twist, you've got enough power to reach 60 mph in nothing-flat. Plus, the available Line Lock feature will even hold the front brakes for you, so you can easily do epic burnouts. But if you want to increase your pony-power by an estimated 19 horsepower, then you're going to want a K&N 69-3535TP Typhoon Performance Intake System.
The 5.0L Coyote V8 in the 2015-2016 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 uses all sorts of trick components to make and manage power. But no matter how many computer controlled gadgets live under the hood, an engine still needs air to burn fuel and create horsepower. On the 2015 & 2016 Mustang GT, air has to first travel through a restrictive air box and thick paper air filer, then into a narrow intake tube that curves around to the throttle body. Once the air exits the air box, those accordion-like folds in the intake tube cause it to swirl around and become turbulent. So by the time it reaches the cylinders, the air has become warm, with an inconsistent flow pattern. The K&N 69-3535TP Typhoon Performance Intake System is designed to reduce airflow restrictions and turbulence, by exchanging the narrow factory intake for a much larger aluminum intake tube; complete with a wide angle mandrel-bent curve to help straighten the airflow path. The interior of the chrome-like finished K&N intake tube is completely smooth to prevent air turbulence. And for a hassle-free installation (which usually takes about 90 minutes), the intake has integrated fittings for the mass airflow sensor, crank case and EVAP vent lines, as well as the idle bypass lines.
Feeding the system is an oversized, high-flow K&N performance air filter. This reusable cotton gauze filter is able to provide superior air filtration, and superior airflow. It can also go for up to 100,000 miles before it needs to be cleaned (depending on driving conditions). To help prevent the filter from sucking in warm air from inside the engine bay, the K&N filter is surrounded by an application specific sealed air filter heat shield that mounts in place of the stock air box.
Thanks to a more direct airflow path, the K&N 69-Series Typhoon Intake System is able to deliver a much larger volume of air to the cylinders. This results in a significant horsepower and torque increase. Along with much faster throttle response and a more satisfying engine note during acceleration. K&N installed a K&N 69-3535TP Intake on a stock 2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L, and dyno testing revealed an estimated increase of 19.25 horsepower and 16.75 ft-lb of torque. This is a considerable improvement over stock, but your individual results may vary due to the mileage, modifications and condition of your specific Mustang. K&N also makes other Mustang performance parts, such as K&N Air Intake Systems for the Ford Mustang of different years/engine sizes, or K&N Air Filters for the Ford Mustang, that can give your pony car a lot more giddy-up.
