A little over a century ago, a man named Billy Durant took the fortune he'd made building wagons and bought several car companies, including Buick and Cadillac. Once the domain of high end luxury cars, these cabin filtration systems use a paper filter to keep dirt, dust, and other allergens from entering the interior. To make it work, outside air is collected, sent through the heating / cooling system, then pushed through the OEM cabin air filter (usually located in a special housing behind the glovebox) before exiting through the vents. The paper filter media prevents the dirt from moving forward, so it collects on the surface of the filter. Over time, all of that dirt will start to restrict the airflow, causing the HVAC to work much harder to get air through the clogged cabin air filter. Some of that accumulated dirt can be forced into the airstream, making the inside of your car feel stuffy due to all of the contaminants mixed.
