Exciting Southern California Motorcycle Flat Track Race Events October 10 and 11
- 3 Oct 2014
The AMA Grand National Championship racing series has a long and illustrious history fueled by early rivalries between the Harley-Davidson Motor Company and the Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company. K&N history is rooted in motorcycle racing. Before the invention of the World’s Best Air Filter, K&N sold motorcycles, motorcycle accessories, and supported a large K&N factory race team. K&N supported some of motorcycle racing’s finest including Johnny Issics, Ralph White, Stevie Nichols, and even a three-time world motorcycle grand prix champion, “King” Kenny Roberts. For years the AMA Grand National Championship race series Flat Track Finals have graced the half-mile dirt oval, normally used for horse racing, at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona, California. 2014 appears to be the end of racing at Pomona, and there currently is not an alternate venue for the Flat Track Finals in Southern, California. With that in mind, local fans and promoters are determined to end the 2014 AMA Grand National Championship race series with a bang.
The weekend begins before the week actually ends in Perris, California. Perris Raceway has been host to all kinds of motorcycle racing for decades. The Southern California Flat Track association holds the annual “Night Before The Pros” race the evening before the Flat Track Finals at Pomona. The quarter-mile dirt oval flat track will host some of the biggest names in the sport as they seek to get additional track time before the big show in Pomona, California.
Saturday the 11th begins with several events at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona. Live music, a vintage motorcycle rally, the Ascot Flat Track Reunion, a Miss Flat Track Pinup Contest, and a chance to meet legends of motorcycle racing should get fans pumped prior to the race. Legendary racers such as Don Emde, Frank Gillespie, Eddie Mulder, Preston Petty, Bubba Shobert, and Skip VanLeeuwen are just a few of the big names who will be onsite signing autographed posters for fans. The Legends Autograph Session will run in conjunction with the Ascot Reunion hosted by Dennis Kanegae. It will take place between 4:30 and 6:00 pm in front of the main grandstands. Practice and qualifying will occur throughout day while the pre-party takes place. Following the Legends Autograph Session are the opening ceremonies. Opening ceremonies for the AMA Grand National Championship Flat Track Finals typically includes a parade lap on track by the Flat Track Finals Grand Marshall. This year, the Grand Marshall is none other than one of Flat Track’s most popular racers Gene Romero. Two Pro Singles heat races and three GNC Expert Twins heat races follow the opening ceremonies. After that, the singles have a last chance qualifier; the twins have a dash for cash, followed by two GNC Twins semi-main events. Fans usually take advantage of the intermission sessions to hit the snack bar, however don’t miss exhibition Super Long Track Speedway Racing during the intermissions. Two-time World Speedway Champion Billy Hamill and a group of young guns will battle it out on Speedway Motorcycles. Following the second intermission, the Pro Singles Main event will kick off at 9:00 pm with the GNC Twins Main Event scheduled for 9:30. The GNC Twins race is sure to be exciting as Harley XR750, Kawasaki Ninja EX650, Ducati, KTM and Suzuki powered twins race around the dirt oval bar to bar at speeds up to 130 mph! The 25-lap main event will be intense as three riders, Jared Mees, Bryan Smith, and Jake Johnson will be fighting to claim the number one plate as the 2014 AMA Grand National Champion. |
