For Second Consecutive Year Jeg Coughlin Dominates the K&N Horsepower Challenge Fan-Vote
- 28 Mar 2013
"It's an honor to win the final spot for the K&N Horsepower Challenge," Coughlin said. "A big thank you to all of our fans and friends that propelled us to this position. We look forward to answering the effort with a big win in Vegas." Dominating the votes for the No. 8 starting spot in the 2013 K&N Horsepower Challenge, for the second year in a row, means one thing coming from the legions of devoted fans that follow every move the driver makes - having your fellow competitors rallying fan votes in your favor though - that puts an entirely new shine on respect.
Coughlin won the fan vote by a wide margin, receiving nearly one-third of the total votes cast by NHRA enthusiasts since voting began in February. However, when Carl Edwards posted a picture on his Facebook page displaying his "Vote Jeg" pin while holding court in the Phoenix Winner circle - it spoke volumes about the racer, as well as the man. That particular moment with Edwards holding the pin and visibly embracing the fan vote at Firebird International Raceway, was in fact deemed so meaningful that it was picked up by several television broadcasts. Coughlin, a 68-time national event winner, is clearly one of the top-10 drag racers of all time, and the highly respected adversary will be looking for his fourth victory in the lucrative bonus event for qualified Pro Stock teams. Coughlin, the driver of the JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger will square-off with the event top seed, Allen Johnson, who pilots the Team Mopar Dodge Avenger. The two new teammates last met in the final round of the 2013 Gatornationals earlier this March, and Coughlin is looking to reverse the finishing order in their next meeting. The K&N Horsepower Challenge is a unique event in that it's a race within a race, and it showcases the top drivers in NHRA Pro Stock competition, for which the winner receives $50,000. The runner-up will receive $10,000, the two semifinalists will each receive $3,000, and the four first-round finishers will each receive $2,500. As part of the program, a $3,000 bonus is awarded to the No. 1 qualifier at each NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event. The 29th annual K&N Horsepower Challenge will be contested during the running of the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals on Saturday, April 6, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event will be televised by ESPN2HD. After being voted into the 8th spot two years in a row, Jeg and his team clearly have the promotion of the K&N Horsepower Challenge Fan vote down to a science. Check out who rallied behind Jeg to get him one step closer to that $50,000 paycheck and the custom K&N trophy.
