NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Points Leader William Byron Scores 3rd Win of Season
- 6 Jul 2015
NASCAR K&N Pro Series East rookie Rico Abreu earned the pole position for the 2015 Visit Hampton 175 at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia with his fast qualifying time of 15.96 seconds at 89.323 miles per hour. However, second place qualifier William Byron quickly took the lead from Abreu on the first lap setting the stage for his eventual win on the tight .375-mile semi-banked oval track. William Byron made a trip to Langley Speedway a couple of weeks before the Visit Hampton 175 to race a Late Model car and become familiar with the track. That trip paid off for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East points leader as he led 174 laps with just one change in leaders on lap 33 when Dalton Sargeant passed him. William Byron said it was a “Really good run for us. With 25 laps to go I told myself I’d give it all I can here.”
Dalton Sargeant put up a good battle; however Kyle Benjamin was able to get past Sargeant for second place with about 10 laps to go. Benjamin held on to second for his best finish since his win in April with Sargeant coming home third to give NASCAR Next drivers all three podium positions.
Gray Gaulding rebounded from having to make a pit stop on the opening pace laps to replace his radio and started in the last row to finish fourth. NASCAR Drive for Diversity driver Jay Beasley finished fifth for his second top-five finish in as many races for Rev Racing. The race was slowed just three times by caution and was completed in 58:43 for a new race record average speed of 70.815 mph. After the race Kyle Benjamin was asked whether or not he thought a late race caution could have changed the outcome. Benjamin said, “Wish we would have had a chance to have a late caution to see what we had.” William Byron expanded his points lead to 23 points over Kyle Benjamin (253-230) with Austin Hill in third with 226 points. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East returned to action at Columbus Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 4 for the NAPA 150. |
