Volare Gets Quick Fix with Mountain Dew for Footbrake Race Win
- 30 May 2008
The World’s Great Footbrake Race is one of the most important races at the
Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tennessee and it is also on racer Michael Beard’s
schedule
Beard drives a Volare with K&N Engineering products and is doing well this racing season. He had problems with a header tube before the race began. “A driver header had cracked clean through,” said Beard. “I rigged together a patch using two Mountain Dew cans and a pair of hose clamps.”
After that quick fix, Beard drove through seven rounds of eliminations and finished in the quarterfinals. Three days of racing saw winners crowned with a total purse of $70,000. Beard earned accolades in the Run for the Money, where he tied with two other drivers for a share in the cash. He lost out in the $50,000 main prize by the end of the second round.
In the feature, Beard defeated Tim Clinton’s Chevelle in the semifinals and took home $10,000. “We were running around so fast that I didn’t have time to think about anything,” said Beard. “When the last win light came on, it was unbelievable.”
Beard’s 1980 Plymouth Volare is powered by a Mopar 360 Magnum crate motor, tipping the scales at 3600 pounds to run in the J/CM (Crate Motor) class in stock eliminator. “We use K&N oil filters, K&N air filters and K&N valve breather covers,” said Beard. “I’m so happy to be able to win for a great sponsor like K&N Filters.”
