K&N and innovation go hand-in-hand, and the new RK-3950 and RK-3951 Street Metal air intake systems are breathing proof. If your Harley-Davidson® was built in this millennium, there’s a good chance that one of these performance intakes will give you bolt-on power and great looks.

The RK-3950 and RK-3951 employ a cast aluminum high-volume, performance air intake housing. That housing is designed in a sleek, ram-air shape that is reminiscent of a muscle car shaker hood scoop. They feature a matte black finish on the aluminum body. The intakes' raised horizontal ribs are highlighted in natural aluminum and match the cooling fins on the Harley V-twin cylinders perfectly. Simply put, these intakes are lookers.

The integrated velocity stack and internal breathers offer top-notch performance

Style is the garnish to the meat and potatoes of performance. The RK-3950 and RK-3951 offer up a full meal of performance with a guaranteed horsepower increase. The systems are designed with an integrated internal velocity stack and built-in breathers. The carefully designed intakes will provide a bump in both horsepower and torque which will result in a noticeably more responsive ride across the full RPM range.

Everything that is needed for installation comes in the intake kit

The K&N dynamometer shows an estimated increase of almost 5 horsepower and over 5 foot-pounds of torque in an otherwise stock 103ci 2015 Softail Deluxe with the RK-3950. With the RK-3951, a stock 103ci 2013 Street Glide showed an estimated gain of over 6 horsepower. Those are gains that will make for a more spirited ride. An added bonus is that the free-breathing system will emit an aggressive and pleasing intake growl.

Finally, any intake worth its salt will provide reliable engine protection, and the RK-3950 and RK-3951 are certainly worth their salt. The K&N 63-9038 air intake system is designed and engineered for the 2015-2017 Lexus RC F

Marketed in more than 70 countries worldwide, Lexus is the luxury vehicle division of the Japanese automaker Toyota. The marque is the result of a corporate project to develop a new premium sedan, code-named F1 starting in 1983. The project concluded with the introduction of the Lexus LS in 1989. Since then the company has added a variety of body styles including sedan, coupe, convertible, and SUV models.

All vehicles marketed internationally as Lexus from 1989 through 2005 were released under the Toyota marque in Japan. It wasn’t until 2005 that Lexus was introduced into the Japanese car market.

Introduced in 2014, the Lexus RC F is a high performance vehicle that features a 5.0-liter 2UR-GSE V8 engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. It includes a vertical G-sensor for Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, an integrated handling and software control system developed by Toyota. It also has Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD) with three modes – standard, slalom, or track. There are also front and rear coil-spring independent suspension, monotube gas-filled shock absorbers and ball joined stabilizer bars, 19-inch diameter forged aluminum wheels, spindle grille with F-mesh pattern on the lower half, unique hood with air vents, front cooling ducts, L-shaped front fender ducts and combination meters with centrally-mounted tachometer that changes according to drive mode, digital and analog speedometer, G-force meter, oil and water temperature gauges, and mileage information.

The 2015, 2016 and 2017 RC F is a two-door version of the Lexus four-door sport sedan. The car borrows from previous and current Lexus models. The front section is from the wide-body GS, the middle section from the previous generation IS convertible and the rear third is taken from the current-generation IS.

The original 5.0-liter V8 has been modified with only the aluminum block retained. The heads, cams, titanium valves, forged connecting rods, crank journals, intake manifold, and larger throttle body are all new. As a result, the new engine generates 467-horsepower compared to 420-horsepower produced by the previous engine. Torque has also been enhanced now achieving 389 lb-ft compared to 371 lb-ft. The engine is classified not to be a gas-guzzler, which avoids a gas-guzzler tax in Japan and converts from Otto cycle to Atkinson cycle under light loads. The set up is considered better than cylinder deactivation because after 100,000 or so miles activated cylinders have greater wear and tear than deactivated ones.

The K&N 63-9038 air intake system offers an estimated boost of 13.58-horsepower for the 2015, 2016, and 2017 Lexus RC F. It is designed and engineered to replace the restrictive factory air filter and air intake tubing and retain the factory air box. It dramatically reduces intake restriction found on the factory intake because the K&N intake offers a smoother, straighter path for the airflow ensuring greater horsepower gain.

The air intake features a K&N replacement air filter that is washable and reusable and can be used for up to 50,000 miles before cleaning is required. The air filter is constructed of a multilayered cotton gauze media that is treated with a special grade of oil that makes the strands of the cotton sticky. K&N also offers an air filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to clean and recharge the filter after up to 50,000 miles of driving, depending on driving conditions, so that it can be used over and over again. In fact, the K&N air filter will last for the life of the car.

K&N backs the air filter with a 10-year/Million Mile Limited Warranty. This guarantees that it will perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without requiring replacement.

Named after the city of Tacoma in Washington State, the Toyota Tacoma compact pickup truck was introduced in 1995 as a modification of the Toyota Hilux and renamed for the North American market. The first-generation models, which ran from 1995 through 2004, were available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations.

The second-generation Tacoma, which was unveiled in 2005, was available as a 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive regular cab, access cab, double cab long bed and TRD, 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive extended cab, X-Runner and X-Runner extended cab.

An interesting fact is that U.S. Army Special Forces was observed using multiple Toyota Tacomas during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in 1991.

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is available only in the extended and crew cab configurations. A 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine is available to power the vehicle. However, the original 4.0-liter V6 has been replaced with a smoother, more fuel efficient V6. The engine stems from the 3.5-liter V6 used to power other Toyota cars. The new engine has 42 more horses than the previous V6. A 6-speed automatic transmission is available to mate with these engines.

K&N offers the K&N 77-9039KP air intake system for 2016 Toyota Tacoma. The kit offers an estimated 18.81-horsepower improvement at 5429 rpm and will also improve throttle response and engine sound. The air intake kit incorporates the factory mass air sensor and crankcase vent hose and features a free-flowing, mandrel-bent aluminum tube air induction system that is designed to replace the factory air filter and air intake housing. The kit reduces airflow restriction because it smooths and straightens the airflow. So the air is directed through the intake tube and into the throttle body of the engine. This improves power gain because the intake assists the engine to breathe in a larger amount of air than it did with the factory air intake. There is also a heat shield that stops hot engine air from entering the intake inlet. This ensures that cool air gets into the engine resulting in increased horsepower.

K&N also offers an air filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to cleanse the air filter after up to 100,000 miles of use. If the filter is cleaned and recharged properly every 100,000 miles, then the filter can be reused over and over again.

David Haagsma Captures an Impressive Second in the SXS World Finals

Consistency and talent earned Haagsma a podium finish in Primm, Nevada

To a guy so used to finishing first, you’d think David Haagsma would be a bit disappointed with a second place finish in the WORCS season opener that doubled as the SXS World Finals. After all, Haagsma is the defending WORCS Pro Production Champion. However, it takes wisdom to see the positive when overcoming seemingly stacked odds.

The Primm, Nevada, event was run in a two-day format with a short course race on Saturday and a traditional off-road race on Sunday. These two events were combined to determine final finishing position.

Rain threw a monkey wrench in the weekend schedule as the Friday qualifying runs were rained out. However, K&N-sponsored Haagsma drew the number one position for the short course race on Saturday.

The variable track conditions in Primm required complete focus at the SxS World Finals

This is where the stacked odds come in. Haagsma was running a non-turbo Polaris RZR, while the vast majority of his competitors were running turbos. Despite a solid and consistent short course race, Haagsma’s non-turbo SXS could not keep pace on the stretches when the throttles were pinned. He finished third in the short course.

Haagsma was running the same set-up as last season but he is optimistic that they can dial things in to stay competitive. He said that the naturally aspirated machines are a bit more reliable, so that was a factor in his impressive finish. However, he said that he may well be running a turbo in the next WORCS round.

In the longer Sunday race, Haagsma’s talent and experience were on full display. He ran a smart and surgical race to secure a runner-up finish. That second podium finish of the weekend earned Haagsma a second place finish overall in the SXS World Finals. Cody Bradbury took the overall win.

The next round of the WORCS SXS off road series will be staged at Honolulu Hills Raceway in Taft, California on February 17-19. We will have to see what race machine David Haagsma rolls out of the trailer in Taft.

To begin, let’s get you acquainted with the makers. Detroit Speed is known in the automotive industry for manufacturing quality aftermarket products for Camaros since 2001. They also have a complete fabrication facility to transform their customers' vehicles into something they could only dream of. DSE focuses on providing and using automotive components and systems which deliver that late model vehicle feel in a classic muscle-car, while also providing the horsepower all auto-enthusiasts constantly crave. And with their first high-profile Mopar project, Detroit Speed did just that.

DSE took this tired old (but beautiful) has-been muscle car and transformed it into a modern day hellcat killer, all via a Chrysler 426ci Gen III Hemi armed with a Whipple 4.0L twin-screw supercharger. Some say no amount of power is too much, but this Charger proved that to be untrue on the chassis dyno. During the dyno runs, severe wheel-spin plagued the Mopar, causing the numbers to be a bit fudged at a traction-limited 664 hp and 831 lb-ft of torque. Detroit Speed thinks 1,000 HP is just a set of sticky tires away.

While the engine is an obvious win, let’s get more into the drivetrain on this gorgeous Hemi. The Charger is equipped with a Bowler 4L80E automatic and 2,200-stall lockup converter to handle the engines high-output, and includes a custom DSE pistol grip shifter so the driver can “handle” the car! The rear axle features a DSE 9-inch rear-end with 31-spline Moser axles, 3.891:1 gears, and a Truetrac limited-slip differential. Now you see another factor of that dyno wheel-spin, right?

In order to provide the supercharged Hemi with enough airflow, DSE customized their own intake utilizing a seriously-rectangular K&N panel filter to accommodate the location and shape of the induction area. K&N panel filters have been increasing in popularity with the more elegant muscle-car restorations. To ensure a great ride, the Charger’s front suspension is comprised of Detroit Speed’s own subframe assembly, control arms, spindles, springs, and sway bar, held smoothly in place by JRi shocks. The rear similarly includes a DSE four-link assembly, sway bar, and springs along with a couple more JRi shocks to handle the massive body the Charger is known for.

When it came to brakes, Detroit Speed didn’t mess around. Seeing as the 1969 Charger’s stock curb weight was at about 3,600 lbs, it’s undoubtedly a good thing DSE elected the Corvette ZR1 15-inch carbon ceramic discs and six-piston calipers along with Bosch adjustable ABS/traction control to handle it’s massive speed capabilities and weight. Stunning gold and black Forgeline Dropkick Wheels hide the more-than-capable brake system, and are fortified with Michelin Pilot Sport 275/35R19s in the front and 335/30R20 rear tires.

One of the most interesting things about this car is the hood. In order to make room for the massive Whipple supercharger, DSE grafted the front section of a Charger hood onto the back section of a Road Runner hood giving them the extra few mandatory inches required. They also carved a seamless, single-piece grille out of billet aluminum giving the Charger unmatched class up front.

It’s fair to say this Charger comes with all the bells and whipples, or eh whistles. What more could you want in a car?
