Mother-Daughter Racers Breaking Snowmobile World Records for That Girl Racing

The track is twisted, with jumps, sharp turns and hairpin curves. The snocross circuit is demanding on racers, allowing no room for distraction. There is no doubt that the mother-daughter relationship is also demanding and powerful. Tiina Duncanson is the mother, Kiersten Duncanson is the daughter. They are That Girl Racing and both are world record grass drag racers.

“My daughter and I were racing in a professional competition when her sled came up hard,” said Tiina. “For a moment I wondered if I should let off the throttle and go back to her, only for a moment.” Tiina decided to race. “It’s that competitive mother instinct, I finished the race and I won.” Kiersten was okay and would have been mad if Tiina stopped. Tiina also said she knew her husband Peter was right there.

These races test the maneuverability and acceleration of the machines, while putting the skill, agility and balance of racers to the test. The next snowmobile race for That Girl is the Canada-USA Championship at St.George de Beauce in Quebec. Some say this is where ice drags began. It is a split event over two days of racing with regular points. The challenge is American vs. Canadian. “I’ll drive my 800, with the K&N filter (RU-1480),” said Tiina. “If you can’t keep the pistons alive you can’t win and if I didn’t have my K&N filter there would be no way.”

Snowmobiles are sold with an air box and not an air filter. Extreme riders and racers remove the air box which leaves them with no protection. To compete, they put a filter on to aid in filtration. It’s necessary in grass drag racing to keep dust and grass strands out of the motor.

“In grass drag racing you have to have a filter,” said K&N Engineering Powersports Brand Manager Johnny Jump. “Without a filter all those grass particles and dust will get into the engine, scar the pistons and tear the motor apart.” As the sides of the skirts of the pistons get worn down from dust and contamination, it breaks down the seal the piston has within the cylinder, said Jump. “Less seal means less compression.”

Tiina said anybody who is anybody on the circuit runs a K&N. “I watched another brand, with a green filter collapse on the course,” she said. “The K&N filter keeps the dirt and snow out of my engine.”

Tiina is known as “That Girl” and Kiersten, 18, is known as “That Other Girl.” Tiina got into the grass drags around 1997. “My husband, Peter used to show antique sleds and that went hand-in-hand with the grass drags,” she said. “I wanted to race and he figured I'd be over it in no time, not so.” Now Peter Duncanson is in the racing business 24-7, said Tiina. Peter keeps the machines running and is the crew chief.

Kiersten began racing at the age of 12. Tiina taught her to drive and to pick lines on the track. “My daughter and I are like mirror images, “said Tiina. “Kiersten is number 721 and I’m 127.”

“Kiersten turned pro when she was 14-years-old,” said Tiina. “We pulled her out of the junior division and put her in the pro-division because she was winning everything.” It didn’t take Kiersten long to prove herself on the pro circuit. Kiersten broke Tiina’s world record three years ago, said Peter. “She did 5.2 seconds @ 93 MPH in the 500 open-modified.”

That Girl Racing uses K&N filter part RX-4140 on the 1000 and SN-2620 and SN-2510 in snocross, said Peter. RX-4140 is a K&N XStream filter, it works well in the 1000 because air can go into the sides and through the top of the filter and you also gain filtration.

“On the 1000 open-mud I have a three year world record,” said Tiina. “Every year I’d break it by dropping the notch a littler farther.”

That Girl Racing will have a new sled for the World Series in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. “We’re always keeping up with the latest technology,” said Tiina. “It’s great to be a female driver with the fastest sled in the world!”

Racing Team Discovers K&N Oil Filters Reduce Maintenance Costs

Racing season begins for Wolfe Motorsports in the Bullring at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada, and each one of its vehicles will have a K&N oil filter this February, said owner Matt Wolfe.

The divisional and national championships are open to drivers competing in the top class at each NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series track, including Late Model Stock Cars, Modifieds, Dirt Modifieds, Dirt Late Models, Late Model Sportsman, Super Late Models, Super Stocks and other styles of cars. Wolfe Motorsports tests February 25th and the season begins March 25th, according to Matt.

“We race all four of our cars 56 times a year,” said Matt Wolfe. “We have 2 Super Late Models, 1 Late Model and 1 Modified.” All have K&N oil filters, said Matt.

Wolfe Motorsports installed K&N oil filters (HP-5001) in place of what the company called “Brand X.” “We noticed after one race when we would normally change our oil, that we could go two races,” said Matt. “After two races we noticed that we still did not have to change our oil.” We asked the technical staff what was going on and they laughed because they already knew the capability of K&N filters and said we could go 4 to 5 races without changing our oil.

“We race with K&N oil filters and only K&N oil filters,” said Matt. “To top it off the oil filter is cheaper than ‘Brand X,’ and we don’t have to change our filters as often as we did before we switched to K&N.” It cut our maintenance budget by two-thirds, Matt said.

“Usually we smell the oil at the end of a race to see if it is okay,” said Wolfe. “We even had it sent out and tested to see if it was still good.” Matt Wolfe said they have really reduced oil changes with the K&N filter.

Commerce Technologies LLC of Santa Ana, California is in the computer business. For years, employees downed servers and cleaned systems at companies where computers get dirty. “Computer dirt is an afterthought in my industry,” said Peter Maddox, managing member of Commerce Technologies. “When users see the pop-up line, ‘the computer has performed an illegal operation and will shut down,’ it’s usually not a hardware problem, it’s a dust problem.”

In order for a chip to remain cool air has to physically go across the top of the chip. A computer chip attracts dirt because of its magnetic field, said Maddox. “As more dirt builds up, the computer starts to heat up because the air is not moving.”

Maddox said he wanted to improve the way he worked and went on a search for the right filter. “HEPA filters are not reusable and depending on the size of the filter can cost up to $30.00 a month,” he said. “I tested one filter after another, from just about every store you can think of.” Maddox said they all failed and some filters he tested would actually pass small pebbles.

One day Maddox was in an automotive store. “I stumbled across a K&N filter, it was the right size and shape, a perfect 7 inch square, and it was reusable,” he said.

Maddox brought it home and tested with baby powder and a fan. This simulated a situation that could bring down a PC. The K&N filter worked despite the baby powder, said Maddox. “I didn’t have to look for filters anywhere else.”

With K&N’s multi layers of oiled cotton gauge, dirt is captured by tiny cotton fibers as it attempts to travel through a passageway. This area is designed to change and alter the direction of dirt particles. As a K&N filter is used its efficiency rating goes up. It’s true the filter gets better as it gets dirty.

The K&N filters work on computers in conjunction with Clean-Aire Computer Enclosures at several companies, said Maddox. “One of my clients is a greenhouse, and the dirt stays away from the computers.”

When I go into businesses people say, “Hey, I have those filters in my cars and are amazed how efficient K&N filters are on computers,” said Maddox.

“I put the K&N filter in my enclosures and so far the same filters have been running for 4 years at a sheet metal shop in Anaheim, California,” said Maddox. “I used to go in and clean the PCs every 6 weeks, but the designed enclosures with K&N filters brought about an immediate reduction in service calls, at least 40%.”

Maddox uses a black base in his enclosures to prove his point. “You should see my customers when I advise them not to clean the K&N filter,” he said. “I want them to wait until it is completely covered in dirt.”

“I also use the K&N cleaning kit to go with the filters,” said Maddox.

“I tell my customers about the K&N Million Mile Warranty,” said Maddox. “No PC will go a million miles but I’m just starting to get an idea of how long these filters will last. I haven’t had any complaints about the K&N filter in the Clean-Aire Computer Enclosures in 4 years.”

“The filter was the key, nothing matters but the filter when it comes to keeping a computer clean,” said Maddox. “K&N is it.”

Inspired by the 1949 Chevy Suburban, there are two engine packages available: 2.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder (143 horsepower) in the LS and 1LT; and a 2.4-liter version with dual-overhead cams and variable-valve timing in the 2LT.
