Brad Baker has reason to smile with an exciting new race team for 2017

Exciting changes are coming in 2017 for American Pro Flat Track racing and for one of the stars of the series, Brad Baker. The former AMA Pro Single National Champion and two-time European Superprestigio winner is primed for a run at reclaiming the number 1 plate in the 2017 racing season.

In this candid Q&A, the K&N-sponsored racer gives us some great insights into what the new flat track series will look like for both racers and fans. Baker also gives us a look back at his 2016 racing season and his exciting racing team news for 2017.

K&N: What are a few highlights of your 2016 flat track season?

Brad Baker: 2016 was another roller-coaster season of ups and downs. I started off the year a little behind as I separated my right shoulder at the Troy Bayliss Classic in Australia in January. I bounced back quickly though and still had a solid start to the American Flat Track series in Daytona with two top 5 finishes. That was just the beginning of the ride though.

The next national, I found myself watching from the sidelines after an engine failure when I was leading the main event in Austin, Texas. That would stay repetitive for the rest of the season. I would have one or two good races then have an engine failure while leading or in the top 3. However, even with the bad luck of engine failures, I still managed a few podiums and a second consecutive Summer X Games bronze medal. I also finished the AMA Pro season and my last race with the Harley Davidson Motor Company by winning the Santa Rosa Mile by 13 seconds.

K&N: You went back to Europe to try to defend your Superprestigio title. Tell us a little about that experience.

BB: Yes, I ended the season with an amazing 5 week trip to Europe. I spent most of my time training with my good friend, Ferran Cardus. Ferran is the Spanish Dirt Track champion and will be competing at the American Flat Track season opener in Daytona in March aboard my 450 Hondas. One highlight of the trip was getting the honor and pleasure to ride with legend Valentino Rossi at his beautiful Motor Ranch in Tavullia, Italy. Vale and I have made plans for him to come ride with me in April between the Argentina and Austin GP.

Next and most important on the schedule was the 4th edition of the Superprestigio Dirt Track Race in the incredible city of Barcelona, Spain. I was the favorite to win the Superfinal race but every year the riders train harder at dirt track, and teams get more serious about set up and preparation so the task would not be easy. Not to mention I'm competing against world class racers and athletes like 5-time MotoGP champ Marc Marquez. I gave it all I had this year but I missed the set up and tire choice this time and just wasn't able to match the pace. I brought home third place behind hometown hero Marquez and gentleman Toni Elias.

K&N: What are your feelings on the changes to Pro Flat Track that are coming next season?

BB: I have a really good feeling about the changes that have been made by AMA Pro (American Flat Track). I think the changes will benefit the sport which benefits riders and teams as well as the fans. For the fans, the flat track class structure has been confusing to understand for quite a few years. Unlike motocross and road racing, where classes have been separated by engine CC and bike size, flat track has been separated by a rider’s skill level riding the same bike. This is still a factor in other motorsports but it's much easier for a fan to distinguish the classes by the sound and look of a bike. Obviously, the more skilled riders compete on the bigger and higher horsepower machines. I'm positive the racing will still be close and fun to watch even on the smaller and more technical courses. For the riders and teams, the sport is now more marketable, which means more OEM brand involvement and outside sponsorship opportunities. Flat track has a lot positive momentum in growth behind it right now and I believe these changes in 2017 will add to that.

K&N: What is your relationship with K&N?

BB: I have had a great relationship with K&N for many years now. They are longtime supporters of the sport I love and it means a lot that they have believed in me for so long. K&N: What are your thoughts on your upcoming 2017 season and what are your goals?

BB: I am really excited about the 2017 season! I am riding for Indian Motorcycle with an all new team behind me. The current Grand National Champion, Bryan Smith, will be my teammate and the man behind his success, Ricky Howerton, will be our Team Manager. With the already proven capability of the Indian Scout FTR 750 mixed with my talent and knowledge of my team, I think we are going to have a solid first year together. The goal is to win races, stay consistent on my bad days, and recover the #1 plate at the end of the year!

Panel Air Filters - The Next Wave In Custom Car and Truck Intakes

If you’re a car, truck, or motorcycle customizer or a race car builder, a panel air filter can be a valuable addition to your bag of tricks. Whether you have a particular demanding customer or you’re just looking to do something different, a panel air filter is incredibly versatile in that it can be mounted to any flat surface, opening up all sorts of possibilities of how to integrate the filter into your next project.

For example, we know of a builder who fabricated a hood-mounted intake with panel filters inserted into the underside of the hood (along with a fabricated fitting to direct the intake air to the inlet). With this arrangement, when the hood is open, all anyone sees is the engine. Furthermore, there’s no need to run an intake pipe across the engine bay to a large conical filter (or two), reducing the amount of clutter under the hood. So if your next build is looking for a super clean look under the hood, consider a panel filter as a means to reduce the underhood components.

A panel filter can also be utilized in a custom air box, whether on a race car or a show car. Mounted remotely near the fresh air source, a panel filter-equipped air box can flow sufficient fresh intake air while keeping the intake sound common to a conical filter to a minimum.

Another application for a panel air filter is on a multiple inline cylinder motorcycle. The builder can provide the customer with a unique, custom solution with a one-off fabricated air box fed by a panel filter.

One panel we recommend for many of these and other applications is the K&N 33-5018. At an overall length of just shy of a foot (11.063 inches) and height of almost four inches (3.813 inches) it’s size allows a great deal of flexibility. Need more airflow? K&N panel air filters are constructed of several layers of oiled cotton filter media, which offers less resistance to intake air than traditional paper filters. The multi-layered cotton material also filters out microparticles that could damage the engine. Ben Davis' Honda CB750 Custom Conquers the Field at the DC International Motorcycle Show

Ben Davis has created a CB750 custom like no other

In the ranking of iconic Japanese motorcycles, the '70s era Honda CB750 has to be near the top. The classic inline-four has served as the basis for choppers, café racers, and even stylized baggers. However, Ben Davis of Legion Cycle Works has created a custom CB750 unlike any other. His build earned Davis an impressive win in the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show. He walked away with the trophy in the K&N-sponsored Modified Retro category at the Washington, D.C. stop of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show (IMS).

His “Xerxes” is a 1979 CB750 that Davis has morphed into an amalgamated custom that somehow works perfectly. The bike is the namesake of the powerful and vengeful Persian king of the late BC era who is central to much of that period’s world history (although now probably better known to most as a major character in the movie 300). Like the historical figure, Davis’ Xerxes looks ready to invade and conquer distant lands.

When discussing his inspiration for the project, Davis may have uttered the greatest bike-builder quote ever. “My goal was to build something that looked like Mad Max and a Spartan had a baby, but the baby listens to heavy metal and eats caviar with its pinkie out,” he said. We have to say that Xerxes is a wonderfully outrageous love child!

Up front is probably the build’s most unique and polarizing feature. The hand-made fairing is reminiscent of an ancient warrior’s helmet and face shield. While completely unconventional, the fairing starts the aggressive, warlike motif in no uncertain terms.

That fairing is mounted to a Suzuki GSX-R1000 front end. The upper triple clamp secures those forks in true warrior style. Davis had a battlefield scene sketched on the aluminum part. With the low-set clip-on handlebars, the rider’s face is up close and personal with that hand-to-hand combat scene.

The suspension trickery doesn’t stop with the modern sport-bike forks. Davis crafted a very clean and sano mono-shock rear setup that is fabricated in a style much like the early Yamaha YZ rear end that really started the single shock era. The wonderfully minimalist framework accentuates the raw nature of the Xerxes build.

The aesthetic armor on this motorized warrior is the gloss black and deep candy red paintjob. That candy red finish took eight coats to get the depth that Davis wanted.

Of course, the heart of this build is the CB750 engine. Well, at least it was a 750 when it rolled off the Japanese assembly line. Davis has gone deep in his performance enhancement, boring the inline-four out to 836. It runs CB900 cams and breathes through Keihin CR29 race carbs. Every bit of that stunning engine is visible due to the under-frame headers feeding into a low-set, stubby conical exhaust can.

Here at K&N we like to approach the calendar with the most eye-catching vehicles in mind. When we saw the custom Ford F-450 that US Specialty Vehicles had to offer, we knew this was a definite candidate.

US Specialty Vehicles is located in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and produces custom vehicles of the utmost quality. So on to their trademark “Rhino GX”! This “truck” has been upgraded with a dual-layer cold steel & roll cage, steel body panels and composite fenders/bumpers, and includes heavy duty running boards as well. These features are important for taking this behemoth off road and ensuring that the driver and passengers remain safe through their journey.

Some of the interior features include designer premium leather seats, power front windows, locks and power telescoping side mirrors. Now we know, as auto enthusiasts you are looking for the engine, drivetrain and suspension features. Well here they come. As stated earlier, it’s equipped with a 6.7L Powerstroke V8 turbo diesel, but also comes in a 6.8L V10 gas engine, if that’s what gets your pistons roaring. It has a 5-speed automatic transmission and of course is four-wheel drive. The F-450 features power assist steering, and has two front solid twin-coil monobeams w/1.38” shock absorbers. It has a back smart hydraulic suspension system, carried by 20x10-inch aluminum custom wheels wrapped in 38-inch Toyo Open Country M/T tires with a heavy duty spare tire carrier to ensure a trip home from the trail.

Some of the safety and security features include advanced multi-stage front airbags, front side curtain airbags and front seat side airbags as well. High intensity light bars are mounted to the front and side roof of the Rhino GX, for a remarkable night time look and added off-road functionality. The front sway bar has been upgraded, while the smart hydraulic suspension roll over protection algorithm maximizes driving safety. Remember, when you’re pushing your off-road vehicle to the limit, any safety measure could change the means of your return.

We mentioned the power, safety, and technical knick knacks, but what about luxury? This F-450 has it too. Fast & Consistent is Carl Renezeder's 2016 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Season

Calm and focused helps Carl Renezeder to perform his best when out in his Pro2 or Pro4

The 2016 season was a strong and consistent year for Carl Renezeder in the Lucas Oil and K&N Filters #17 trucks. Racing in both the Pro 4 and Pro 2 categories takes twice the amount of work for the team, as well as performing two completely different driving techniques. Carl and his team were ready for any challenges that came their way in the 2016 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season.

Starting off the season in his Pro 4, Carl finished in first place twice and also second place twice in the first four races. Carl was able to take the championship points lead after the first weekend of racing. Carl kept up the strong finishes all year long and was able to finish on the podium 11 out of 15 races. He would hold onto the lead all season long, all the way up to the final lap of the final race where Carl finished second in the race and ended up with a tie for first in the championship points with another K&N Filters driver, Kyle LeDuc. When Carl was asked about how he felt his season went he said, ”Overall we had a great season, we succeeded in putting the trucks on the podium 16 times! The season ended with a lot of excitement, with a tie for the Pro-4 Championship Points in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, making for some exciting racing and a lot of fun for fan participation. In Pro 2 we ended up 3rd place in points.”

In the Pro 2 Carl also had a strong season with a win and several podiums. Every race you could count on Carl being towards the front, battling non-stop with every lap of the race. While doing so he put on a great show for all the fans to watch at the races or on TV. After the races you could walk by his pit and see all the fans huddling around him and his truck, telling him how much they enjoyed watching him drive.

There is not really any down time in racing, even though it’s called an off season; it’s just time to get ready for next year’s race season. Looking forward to the off season, Carl said, “We try to learn from every race, and use that knowledge to continue to make the trucks faster and better. I have the best team who, together with my sponsors, are constantly refining the trucks to give us the winning edge. Since we finished the year out like we did, we know we were on the right track with the trucks so we will be working on perfecting the trucks so we can win more races next year. My sponsors, fans, family and my team motivate me to keep winning, and I couldn't do what I do without them.”

Carl is also looking forward to the off season to spend some extra time with his family and enjoy the little down time. So keep your eye on Carl and his team to come out focused and prepared for the 2017 season, and looking to start out strong and continue that all the way through the season.
