Gilliland Wins Sixth K&N Pro Series West Race of Season, Leads Points Race

NASCAR Next driver Todd Gilliland won the K&N Pro Series West race at Meridian Speedway in Idaho and took a commanding lead in the K&N Pro Series West standings. Two women drivers finished on the podium.

“We started the year not too great at the real tiny, quarter-mile tracks,” Gilliland said. “I think that showed at Orange Show where we finished fourth. Then going back to Stateline Speedway, then here, and getting two wins. I feel like we’ve been strong everywhere we’ve gone.”

Gilliland took the lead on a green-white-checkered flag finish in the NAPA Auto Parts/Idaho 208. The race was extended eight laps because of a multicar crash five laps from the scheduled end. Ryan Partridge, who won the pole, his third in a row and fifth of the season, spun out during the green-white-checker finish. He led a race-high 173 laps and was in the lead on lap 214.

Gilliland passed Partridge on lap 215 and took the checkered flag for his sixth win of the season. Gilliland and Partridge battled for most of the race. Partridge was out front for the first 60 laps. Gilliland took the lead on lap 135 and was out front for 28 laps. Partridge regained the lead on lap 164, but the crash on lap 203 brought out a red caution flag.

When the race resumed, Partridge spun out. By the time he recovered, Gilliland won the race and Partridge crossed the finish line in 11th place. Gilliland has won seven races in his rookie season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. He also won the season opener in the K&N Pro Series East at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida.

“It feels amazing,” Gilliland said. “That’s something we definitely wouldn’t have imagined going into this year. I think we set our goals saying we wanted to win a race in the whole season and finish in the top 10 in points. Now we find ourselves six wins in and in the points lead going in to the last race, it’s really crazy.”

NASCAR Next driver Julia Landauer was second, her best career finish in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. It matched the best finish by a woman driver in the history of the K&N Pro Series West.

“This was a rough little ride,” Landauer said. “We started eighth, it wasn’t where we wanted to start. But just kept picking them off. The outside line was definitely really good on the restarts. That’s where I did really well. “This is by far the best the car has been all season. We’ve worked really hard. I’m super psyched. I want to get the win at Roseville now.”

Nicole Behar, a NASCAR Next alum making her third K&N Pro Series West start of the season, was third. She has three top-10 finishes in her three K&N Pro Series West races.

“It was a pretty rough race,” Behar said. “Just tried to stay out of the crashes and the incidents in the beginning. I think the main part was just staying out of the crashes, try to save your stuff and be there at the end. I think that’s what we did.

“It got rough in the end, but we held on and came away with a third-place finish.”

Gilliland has a 25-point lead over Partridge in the K&N Pro Series West standings with one race remaining. Noah Gragson is third in the K&N Pro Series West standings, 46 points behind Gilliland. Gracin Raz is fourth and Landauer is fifth in the K&N Pro Series West standings.

“We were able to capitalize on a small there mistake by (Partridge) and we were able to get the win,” Gilliland said. “It’s goes to feel good going into Roseville knowing that we are in control.”

The K&N Pro Series West season finale is at All American Speedway in California on Oct. 15.

Noah Gragson Wins Third K&N NASCAR Pro Series Race In a Row at New Jersey Motorsports Park

Justin Haley won pole at New Jersey Motorsports Park

Justin Haley won the pole for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at New Jersey Motorsports Park. It was his second pole of the season

Noah Gragson is on a roll in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. He won his third K&N Pro Series race in a row by taking the JustDrive.com 125 at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

He won both NASCAR K&N Pro Series West races at the Utah Motorsports Complex doubleheader. His win in the K&N Pro Series East race at New Jersey Motorsports Park made it three in row and the fifth of his K&N Pro Series career. He also won the K&N Pro Series East race at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut in June.

“Being able to race there, get two wins is a lot of confidence for me,” Gragson said about winning the races in Utah. “I was able to know what the tires were going to do there at the end. I run around there until the halfway break, like a lot of people did. After the halfway break, we went really, really hard, trying to pass as many cars as possible.”

It is also the NASCAR Next driver’s third win in a row on road courses. He started on the second row and took the lead on lap 48 of the 55-lap race. He crossed the finish line 2.030 seconds ahead of Dominique Van Wieringen. Justin Haley won the pole and led the first lap before Van Wieringen took the lead. She was out front for four laps before giving way to Spencer Davis.

“We had to ride around a lot, conserve our tires. This track surface is really rough,” Haley said. “The tires just get ate up. The first half there, we were just kind of riding, played it well. The second half didn’t have any cautions, there were no cautions through the whole race. That hurt us a little bit.”

John Holleman passed Davis for the lead on lap 9. Van Wieringen, who started the race on the fifth row, regained the lead on lap 30 and held it for 18 laps. “A few cars went out there and led some laps and were going really hard,” Gragson said. “I was thinking big-picture racing. Last week there in Utah, I did it two times. We had races similar like this, same formatting, with only one set of tires. Really long races, I think that’s where the experience came through.”

On lap 47, Gragson took his first lead in the race, passing Van Wieringen for the last eight laps. Haley crossed the finish line in second, followed by Kyle Benjamin in third. Colin Cabre was fourth. Van Wieringen dropped to fifth when the checkered flag flew.

“I ran her down and caught her in one part of the race track,” Gragson said. “I pulled a really good crossover move on her to take the lead and put on a real nice show for the fans. Led about seven laps there at the end.” Benjamin said he has little experience on road courses and will be more prepared the next time the KN Pro Series visits a road course.

Noah Gragson, center, celebrates with the top five finishers in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Justin Haley was second, Kyle Benjamin was third, Collin Cabre was fourth and Dominique Van Wieringen was fifth

“We had a pretty decent night,” Benjamin said. “I don’t have a lot of real road course experience. I’ve been learning as I’ve went. We made a lot of gains in practice. I’m definitely leaving here a better road racer than when I came. I should be better next time.”

In 12 K&N Pro Series East races, Gragson has won twice, has four top-five and six top-10 finishes. He is fourth in the K&N Pro Series East standings despite missing one race.

“NASCAR, K&N, without them, we wouldn’t be racing here at New Jersey Motorsports Park,” Gragson said. “This is huge, not for me, but for my team. Every single one of us. They work their tails off in the shop every week.”

Haley leads the K&N Pro Series East standings by 29 points over Benjamin. The K&N Pro Series East season finale is at Dover International Speedway on Sept. 30.

Jordan Phillips Winding Up a Successful GNCC Professional 4X4 Racing Season

Jordan Phillips racing in GNCC race in West Virginia

Jordan Phillips fighting his way to a 5th place finish in West Virginia

If you have not experienced the racing at a Grand National Cross Country Series (GNCC) event, you are missing something good. The AMA sanctioned GNCC series is expansive, with 54 motorcycle classes, 40 ATV classes, and 8 UTV classes. Founded in 1973, the GNCC is America’s premier off-road racing series.

One of the rising stars of the venerable series is Jordan Phillips. Phillips competes in the 4X4 Pro class and has had, in his words, a season with a “fair share of ups and downs.” With 11 rounds of the grueling 13 round season in the books, ups and downs are to be expected. Looking back, Phillips says, “The year started rough but I ended up turning it around at round three which was at my home track in Morganton, NC. I got my first win of the season there.”

The rugged GNCC can take a toll on equipment and Phillips has not been immune from breakdowns. “Moving forward (from round three), we had some mechanical issues at the following two rounds.” However, resilience is one of the the earmarks of a great racer and Phillips again followed a season lull with an impressive rebound. “At round six in Indiana, we once again pulled off a win and took the overall in the morning race. I would definitely say that winning two races in this highly competitive class has been the highlight of my season so far.”

K&N-sponsored Jordan Phillips’ racing 4X4 Quad and trailer

It’s no surprise that a company like K&N, with its foundation firmly rooted in performance and reliability, would partner with a talent like Phillips. “This is my third year working with K&N. I started using K&N filters during my first 4x4 Pro season back in 2014.” On why he is loyal to K&N Engineering, Phillips says, “It's an easy choice for me using K&N products. They have a long history in powersports success at all levels. The air filters provide more power, better filtration and they are very easy to clean!”

Like any true competitor, Phillips has both short and long-term career goals. As for the remaining portion of the 2016 season, he says, “My immediate goals would be to win the last two GNCC races and place top 5 in series championship points. It won't be easy, but anything is possible.” Phillips is currently poised within striking distance of that goal with his current sixth place season position.

K&N and Phillips have had a winning partnership for 3 years

Phillips’ big picture goals are lofty. “My long-term goals would be to podium every event in 2017 and win the 2017 4x4 Pro championship! I also see myself venturing into the SXS world at some point.” SXS racing features four wheeled vehicles with seating for two, side by side. Racers are harnessed inside a roll cage.

With a powerful combination of talent, drive, and vision, Jordan Phillips’ goals are certainly within his reach. Look for Phillips to continue his ascent in the racing world, with solid backing from elite sponsors like K&N. For your car, truck, motorcycle, ATV or UTV filtration needs, look to K&N’s search by vehicle tool to find exactly the right part.

K&N Partners with the PowerSport Institute Motorcycle Technician Training Program

Powersport Institute on the Ohio Technical College Campus

PSI is an integral part of the Ohio Technical College Campus in Cleveland

K&N has entered into an exciting partnership with the PowerSport Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. The PowerSport Institute (PSI) is a branch campus of Ohio Technical College and serves as a comprehensive and in-depth training program for aspiring motorcycle technicians. The impressive program is the Midwest’s technician training center for Polaris, Victory, S&S Cycle, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Indian Motorcycles. The facility has been a family-owned business since 1969.

When asked to give a nutshell overview of what students receive through their education at the institute, Campus Director, Bernie Thompson said, “PSI is an elite program that offers manufacturer certification courses. We provide motivating learning experiences in a service environment atmosphere for our students and team members through continuously evaluating student outcomes, modeling professional leadership principles, institutional goal achievement, and valuing truth and honesty.” Thompson added that the goal at PSI is that students possess solid entry-level technician skills “immediately as they enter the industry.” After the 12-18 month training program, Thompson said the students will display “a wealth of knowledge and skills that are expected of a first level (Bronze) certified technician.”

Powersport Institute Suzuki training center in Cleveland, Ohio

PowerSport Institute training facilities are state-of-the-art

In the initial phase of the partnership between PSI and K&N, students will be installing and servicing K&N air filters, oil filters, and intake systems as part of their service department training. The students will also use a dynamometer to analyze performance gains from the air filter and intake swaps. Thus, K&N products will aid in both practical and theoretical technical learning. Later on in the partnership, K&N may even team with PSI to develop curriculum as it relates to intake, as well as filtration technology. Every indication is that this will blossom into a deeply-rooted and mutually-beneficial educational relationship.

A key part about the partnership is the fact that K&N high flow air filters and premium cartridge type and spin-on/wrench-off oil filters are OEM replacement items that meet or exceed OEM specifications and requirements. Therefore, they can be used as direct OE replacements. K&N manufactures a multitude of applications that fit nearly every model of motorcycle and/or ATV that is on or off the highway today. Making K&N the perfect go to brand when looking for a direct replacement for nearly any model we get through the facility.

Thompson’s trust of K&N’s products and business ethics is a big part of why the partnership has evolved. As the Campus Director, Thompson is acutely aware that PSI’s reputation is enhanced by using and teaching with only the best parts available. He said, “PSI education partners produce the best products in the industry.” Thompson went on to state that the lofty vision and goals of PSI are “in line with K&N’s purposes, and we trust that K&N will continue to produce quality products for many years to come.”

If it has two wheels, PSI will help students learn about it

The educational partnership between K&N and PSI will continue to evolve, just as the institute’s commitment to delivering a quality education continues to grow. Thompson made it clear that continuing education starts at the top. He said, “The winter dealer training schedule will soon be released and we are excited to continue gaining knowledge on new models and service techniques that we can pass along to our students.” Clearly Thompson’s philosophy is that the PowerSport Institute instructors and administration must constantly be learning to provide relevant, up-to-date knowledge and techniques to their students. This meshes well with K&N Engineering’s ongoing obsession to develop and deliver the very best in performance and filtration products to its customers.

Let Your 1999-2016 Harley-Davidson® Breathe Deeply with the K&N RK-3932X Air Intake

K&N RK-3932X intake system for Harley-Davidson motorcycles

The simple and clean design of the RK-3932X intake looks great on all Harleys

Harley-Davidson® motorcycles that have undergone a custom engine build or are pushing a large displacement, pose problems for standard or stock air boxes and filters. The factory box and a conventional filter simply can’t provide the flow rate to keep up with the performance of that more extreme build or larger engine. Enter the K&N RK-3932X. That X at the end of the product number indicates that the filter is of an extra tall design that is engineered to keep up with your engine’s performance air needs. An estimated 7 horsepower gain has been verified in dynamometer testing when running the intake.

K&N’s engineers are world renowned for not only designing intakes that are industry topping in performance and filtration, but are also user friendly. That extra tall air filter in the RK-3932X easily mounts to your Harley® via a custom aluminum backing plate that mounts directly to the throttle body and incorporates an aluminum integrated, internal-run breather system. The beefy rubber mounting gasket helps absorb the iconic vibration that makes Harleys what they are. An intake that shakes off your V-twin is not going to do you much good.

K&N RK-3932X parts included in box

The carefully engineered system is easy to install

K&N’s attention to detail in the engineering of the intake does not stop there. The RK-3932X features a clean and simple cover design that accentuates the style of any Harley. The chrome and black motif is attractive and designed to stay that way. The intake is equally at home on the open road or on display at a custom bike show. Of course, the RK-3932X is designed to show off the instantly identifiable and universally respected K&N oiled cotton gauze filter media.

While we are speaking about that filter media, the RK-3932X features a washable and reusable filter cartridge that will save you big money over the miles and years that you own your Harley. You simply need to clean and re-oil the filter yearly (or more often if you wish) and reinstall. The added benefit to the design is that you will not be filling our over-stuffed landfills with dozens of disposable filters. The American-made filter comes with K&N’s legendary Million Mile Limited Warranty.

There you have it. Don’t make your custom built or large displacement Harley suck air through a straw. Open up its lungs (or jugs) with the RK-3932X, which is designed for heavy breathing! Make sure to find the correct intake, air filter, and oil filter using the K&N search by vehicle tool.
