So what is One Wheel Revolution? No, it’s not a hostile take-over by militant unicyclists. As the company’s founder, Rob Carpenter, puts it, “A One Wheel Revolution performance is doing the unthinkable on some of the heaviest and most powerful v-twin motorcycles on the market.” He adds, “Our shows combine choreography, daring maneuvers, performance v-twins, and thrilling showmanship into 40 minutes of non-stop entertainment.” Clearly, the company’s name reflects time spent on one wheel at Carpenter’s performances. Wheelies, stopies, drifts, and burnouts are the name of the game at a One Wheel Revolution show. However, there are new and exciting things on the horizon for the company.

A little background is in order. Picking up riding at the age of 21, Carpenter came to motorcycling later in life than most elite riders. His Montana home afforded him virtually no opportunity for instruction or mentorship.  His focus and determination throughout the first five years of his motorcycling education is the stuff of legends. “I wanted to become a great rider so badly that I dedicated literally every spare minute I had to riding. I rarely hung out with friends, celebrated holidays, or did anything that wasn’t going to improve my riding abilities. If my friends or family wanted to see me, they knew they either had to go to the riding spot or my garage to find me.” There is a lesson in dedication for young riders!

While performances at motorcycle rallies and industry shows may be the bread and butter of One Wheel Revolution, it is something out of that arena that really gets Carpenter stoked. He is spending more time in front of a camera. He says that photo and media projects often involve riding his big v-twins in unfamiliar and unpredictable environments. “My most memorable shoots this year were in the dry lake beds south of Las Vegas, shooting a video at the Los Angeles River Canal, and shooting at El Mirage. Something about riding places you shouldn’t keeps me hungry for more!”

Obviously, equipment reliability and performance are vital to Carpenter’s success. His working relationship with K&N is a huge factor in keeping his high-performance motorcycles fast and furious. Carpenter says, “In my 5 years of using K&N products, the team has been very supportive. K&N provides me with top quality air and oil filters. Performing on air-cooled motorcycles, it is essential that clean oil and cool, clean air can adequately flow through my bike’s motor in extreme temps.” He continues that his trust of K&N products also stems from the company’s longevity and its success in high-performance applications spanning all aspects of motorsports. “I know K&N products keep everything from top fuel dragsters, trophy/off-road trucks, and endurance race machines running strong in the most extreme elements.”

The financial backing that K&N provides One Wheel Revolution is also vital to Carpenter’s success. He says that K&N’s support is used to upgrade or maintain his equipment as well as help cover the expensive insurance needed for performances. Clearly the symbiotic relationship that has developed between Carpenter and K&N is mutually beneficial.

As for his future goals, Carpenter wants to take his photo and video projects to a higher level. He not only finds personal gratification in the endeavors, but he sees unique benefit in marketing for his sponsors. However, it’s not just show and performance goals that drive him. Carpenter has some exciting machinery in the works. “Currently I am building a 2016 Dyna FXDLS into a wheelie monster. This is an amazingly powerful and nimble platform to begin with. The addition of many amazing products from sponsors like K&N will make this an unstoppable wheelie and drift machine!”

While you will still be able to see Carpenter on one wheel at a motorcycle event near you, you’ll also likely see him gracing the pages of magazines and ripping it up on video. One thing is a given, Rob Carpenter will continue to pursue his goals with dogged determination, a highly-refined skill set, and unique business acumen.

Big Change, Bigger Results for Drag Racer and K&N Employee Greg Ventura

Greg Ventura and his “Wally” trophy, after capturing the Super Street win at the NHRA Lucas Oil Series race at Fontana earlier this year.

Greg Ventura and his “Wally” trophy, after capturing the Super Street win at the NHRA Lucas Oil Series race at Fontana earlier this year.

Drag racing is not a sport or pastime. It’s a lifestyle. And for K&N maintenance analyst Greg Ventura, it has been a lifelong passion shared with his father Al. It culminated earlier this year, when Greg went seven rounds to win the Super Street class at the NHRA Lucas Oil Series race at Auto Club Raceway, in Fontana, California.

Greg (fourth from right) and crew celebrate the win at Fontana last spring, after going seven rounds to win the Super Street class in the Chevy II he built more than 20 years ago with his father.

Greg (fourth from right) and crew celebrate the win at Fontana last spring, after going seven rounds to win the Super Street class in the Chevy II he built more than 20 years ago with his father.

Making the win all the more poignant was the fact Greg – at the ripe-old age of 42 – did it in the 1966 Chevy II that he’s had since high school. He and his father built the car way back in 1993 and for the next 21 years, despite a number of changes and updates, it ripped the strip with a high-winding, high-compression small block. That came to an end in 2014, when Greg admitted the fun factor with the car had diminished.

“To be honest, the car hadn’t run since 2011 and my father, Al Ventura, passed away the following year. I thought I was pretty much at the end of the line with the car,” he says. “But during lunch with fellow K&N employee Kevin McClelland, who raced in the same class, he suggested changing up the combination in a big way – with a big-block engine on pump gas.”

Rather than high-rpm horsepower to pull the vintage Nova down the track, the idea was to rely on the big-hammer adage that there’s no replacement for displacement. The torque of a big-inch big block would not only provide a wheel-lifting shove for the featherweight Chevy, but do so at comparatively low rpm.

“Kevin’s suggestion was that big torque and low rpm with translate into great performance and lower maintenance than the high-rpm small block,” says Greg. “Great longevity and lower maintenance sounded great to me – and I hadn’t run a big block, so it all sounded like a good way to rejuvenate my racing program and enthusiasm.”

NHRA’s Super Street class runs on a fixed 10.90 index – on a pro tree – with V-8 cars weighing no less than 2,800 pounds. Greg Ventura’s Chevy runs an all-aluminum BRODIX big-block to minimize weight and enhance front-to-rear balance.

Greg admits it’s an idea his father floated way back in 1997.

“Yes, but the kid who knew everything didn’t want to hear it,” he says. “I was afraid of sacrificing performance, so I didn’t pursue it.”

More than 15 years later, he had a 568-cubic-inch engine built, using a lightweight BRODIX aluminum cylinder block and BRODIX aluminum heads, offsetting what would have been a pretty drastic weight balance change for the car.

Greg acquired the Chevy II when he was in high school and building it into a drag car was a father-son project that began in 1993.

Greg acquired the Chevy II when he was in high school and building it into a drag car was a father-son project that began in 1993.

“I wanted the changeover to be a 100-percent-correct update, with excellent attention to detail to make sure everything fit correctly and cleanly,” says Greg. “It was a challenge, but the results were ultimately worth it.”

Not surprisingly, the new engine required a new set of custom headers, a new motor plate and even modifying the existing hood scoop to accommodate the big block and K&N E-1500 with XStream top filter that Greg runs. That isn’t the only K&N product he runs though. He also uses a 62-1513 crankcase filter, HP-3002 oil filter, and 81-1005 fuel filter.

The work consumed Greg’s spare time from the fall of 2014 to the spring of 2016. A year later, he collected the trophy in Fontana. It was Greg’s first outing with the car since the engine change, affirming the decision to make the change and reinforcing that rejuvenated feeling of getting behind the wheel again of a race car he’s worked with for just about a quarter of a century. It also validated the idea his father offered nearly two decades earlier.

“It was very satisfying to roll out there and come away with a win at the very first race,” he says. “I felt like I had a brand-new car and I had a blast.”

Greg’s dad Al would certainly have approved – and maybe said, “I told you so.”

Acknowledgements: Greg thanks Kevin McClelland, K&N, Tom Bogner at Lucas Oil Products, Tom Capalbo from Taylor Freezers, Jimmy from Race Trans, the guys at Brodix, Keith from Total Seal Piston Rings, Aeromotive Fuel Systems, Darryl Duncan and Jason Swift at Goodyear Racing Tires, as well as Kevin Drew for getting the suspension and chassis ironed out and Jack Derencin for helping make a big block fit where a small block used to. He also sends special thanks to his wife Adriana and his mom, Connie Ventura.

2015-2016 Mazda CX-3 Replacement Air Filter from K&N is Designed to Boost Performance

The K&N 33-5042 replacement air filter is designed to fit into the existing factory air box and installs in around 5 minutes with usually no tools required.

The K&N 33-5042 replacement air filter is designed to fit into the existing factory air box and installs in around 5 minutes with usually no tools required.

Japanese automaker Mazda initially began as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. in Hiroshima, Japan in 1920 as a manufacturer of machine tools. It produced its first vehicle, the Mazda-Go, an auto-rickshaw, in 1931. Although every automobile it produced carried the Mazda name, the company itself wasn’t called Mazda until 1984.

As a way to differentiate itself from other Japanese carmakers, the company developed the Wankel rotary engine. Contrary to the common piston-designed internal combustion engine, the Wankel engine does not use pistons. Instead, it relies on a rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion. Advantages over the more common piston engine include simplicity, smoothness, compactness, high revolutions per minute, and a high power-to-weight ratio.

Mazda partnered with Ford Motor Company in 1979 when Ford acquired 7% stake in the Japanese manufacturer. By 1996, Ford owned 33.3%. The American carmaker began to divestiture its holdings from 2008 to 2010, but still owned 2.1% in 2014. During its cooperation with Ford, Mazda manufactured the Mazda B-Series, the Bongo, Titan, the Probe, the Mazda 626 sedan, the Mazda MX-6 sports coupe, and the Mazda 121. It also assisted in the manufacturing of the Ford Explorer in 1991, which Mazda sold as the 2-door Mazda Navajo.

Through the years Mazda produced a number of engines other than the rotary engine. These include a V-twin, which powered three-wheeled delivery vehicles in the 1950s; straight-4s, and V6 engines. A popular model that Mazda produces is the CX-3, a subcompact crossover SUV, which was unveiled in November 2014. The first incarnation was the CX3 racing concept car, which was introduced in 2015. The production version of the car was unveiled in 2016.

There are three engines available to power the car –- a 1.3-liter SkyActiv-G turbocharged I4 gasoline, a 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G I4 gasoline, and a 1.5-liter SkyActiv-D diesel. Two transmissions are also available –- the 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual. The car has been awarded the 2016 Yahoo Autos Savvy Ride of the Year.

K&N offers the 33-5042 replacement air filter for the Mazda CX-3. The filter is designed to increase the performance of the CX-3 engine. The filter features multiple layers of cotton gauze that has been treated with a special grade of filter oil that saturates the cotton strands making them very sticky. This permits the filter to capture and hold dirt particles until it comes time to clean the filter. K&N recommends cleaning the filter every 50,000 miles, depending on driving conditions. The unique construction of the filter allows it to outperform paper and foam filters.

Paper air filters have to be thick and the fibers must be tightly compressed and dense. This restricts the airflow. Moreover, as the paper filters become more and more congested, they restrict the airflow, causing your engine to not perform as well as possible.

Foam air filters have less surface area, which adversely affects airflow and dirt holding capability. Cell foam saturates with oil, dirt builds up on the outside and blocks openings and higher vacuum pressure alters the cells causing them to draw dirt deeper into the filter resulting in restricted airflow.

K&N offers air filter cleaning kits that can be used to clean the air filter and re-oil.  This means that the filter can be used over and over again as long as it is cleaned after 50,000 miles of use. Truth is, this filter could be the last that you will ever have to buy.

That’s why K&N is so sure of the quality performance of the air filter. So it guarantees the filter with a Million Mile Limited Warranty. The warranty promises that the air filter will last for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without the need for replacement.

The K&N 33-5042 replacement air filter fits the following vehicles:

2016 MAZDA CX-3 2.0L L4 F/I - All
2015 MAZDA CX-3 2.0L L4 F/I - All

2008-2015 Harley-Davidson K&N Air Intake System Boosts Airflow, Horsepower, Torque

Caption

The K&N RK-3947 Air Intake System for Harley-Davidson Motorcycles features an oversized black, powder-coated aluminum backing plate for solid mounting.

Motorcycles from American manufacturer Harley-Davidson® may arguably be the most popular motorcycles on the road today. The company offers a wide assortment of models that include the Road Glide, Street Glide, Ultra Limited, Street Glide, Electra Glide Ultra Classic, the Road King and the three-wheel trikes –- the Freewheeler and Tri Glide Ultra Classic.

Caption

Everything needed to install the system is included in the kit. You only need a few basic hand tools and about 90 minutes and you will be back cruising down the road.

The Road King, Road Glide, Street Glide and Electra Glide models fall under the Touring family, also known as “dressers” or “Baggers.” The Road King has a “retro cruiser” look and is reminiscent of the big-twin models Harley-Davidson offered in the 1940s and 1950s that featured large clear windshields. Electra Glide is distinguished by its full front fairings and most include a fork-mounted fairing dubbed the “Batwing.” The Road Glide and Road Glide Ultra Classic includes a frame-mounted fairing, known as the “Sharknose” that also features a dual front headlight.

Touring Models in general include large saddlebags, rear coil-over air suspension and the only models to include full fairings with radios and CBs. All Touring Models share the same frame, which was first introduced with a Shovelhead motor in 1980 that have been carried forward with some improvements until 2009, when it was dramatically redesigned. It also has a unique frame that is differentiated from other Harley-Davidson motorcycle frames by its steering head located in front of the forks. Moreover, it was the first Harley® frame to rubber mount the drivetrain to separate the rider from the vibration of the big V-twin engine.

The Touring cycles went through a refreshing in 1994 when the oil tank was moved to a location under the transmission and the battery was moved inboard from the right saddlebag to under the seat. Another modification took place in 1997 with the frame changed to permit a larger battery to go under the seat and the seat height was lowered. Harley-Davidson introduced a new engine to power these motorcycles in 2007. The 96-cubic inch (1,570 cubic centimeters) Twin Cam was mated to a 6-speed transmission and delivered higher speed on the highway.

The company introduced the FLHX Street Glide in 2006 into the Touring family. It actually was the personal motorcycle of Harley-Davidson’s senior vice president and chief styling officer William (Willie) G Davidson. In 2008, the company added anti-lock braking systems, cruise control as factory installed option, a new six-gallon fuel tank and throttle-by-wire to the Touring models.

Caption

After installing the kit, fellow motorcyclists will know that you take performance seriously.

In 2009, Harley-Davidson made changes to the touring models with the introduction of a new frame, new swingarm, revised engine mounting system, 17-inch (430mm) front wheels for all models except the Road King Classic, and a 2-1-2 exhaust. All of this resulted in better load carrying capacity, better handling, a smoother engine, longer-range and less exhaust heat transmitted to the rider and passenger.

Also in 2009, Harley-Davidson debuted its first three-wheeled motorcycle since it discontinued the Servi-Car in 1973, the Tri-Glide Ultra Classic. A 103-cubic inch (1,690 cc) engine was also unveiled that exclusively powers the trike.

Harley-Davidson again made modifications to the touring motorcycles in 2014 that included a new 103CI high output engine, one handed easy open saddlebags and compartments, a new boom box Infotainment system with 4.3-inch or 6.5-inch screens, Bluetooth and made available GPS navigation and Sirius XM Radio, and USB ports and charging.

K&N offers the RK-3947 air intake system for these Harley-Davidson models. The system is guaranteed to increase horsepower and torque and replaces the stock air filter cleaner backing plate assembly.

The air filter inside the intake system is washable and reusable. K&N recommends checking and cleaning the filter once a year, depending on driving conditions. The filter features multiple layers of cotton gauze media that is treated with a special grade of filter oil so it captures and holds dirt particles. K&N offers air filter cleaning kits that cleanse the filter in seven easy steps so that it can be reused.

The air intake system features an oversized black, powder-coated aluminum backing plate for solid mounting to the cycle and built-in breathers that are designed to replace the external original equipment breathers. The breather directs pressure into the throttle body opening and not out into the air filter.

K&N backs the air filter with a unique Million Mile Limited Warranty® that promises that the filter will last for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without needing replacement.

The RK-3947 air intake system is designed for the following H-D® models:
