1996-2005 VW Passat Air Filter Delivers Clean Engine Air

K&N 33-2125 air filter for Volkswagen Passat

The K&N 33-2125 filter features cotton gauze construction that, besides protecting the engine, brings a greater surface area and increased airflow to your engine.

Volkswagen owners may not all be enthusiasts, but the Volkswagen Passat could make an enthusiast out of you, even if yours is simply a family car with chores to do. The Passat got a good start in 1973 with a new front-mounted, water-cooled engine, front wheel drive derived from recently acquired Audi technology, and a unique fastback hatch design from Italian genius Giorgetto Giugiaro. Within its first year on the road, it was tagged as the most modern family vehicle of its time; the people's car with pizzazz, if you will, stepping in where the aging Beetle was stepping out.

Fast forward to 1996 and generation five of the Passat was introduced as an all-new vehicle on the VW-Audi B5 platform. Aerodynamic engineering on the sedan (saloon) brought its coefficient of drag down to 0.27 percent. It returned to the shared Audi transverse-mounted engine in five versions (including a 2.3-liter V5 Audi-derived gasoline power plant) plus turbocharged direct injection (TDI) for both the diesel and gasoline-powered models.

All wheel drive became an option in 1997 with the Torsen limited slip differential for the 1.8-liter, 2.8-liter v6, 1.9-liter TDI, and 2.5-liter V6 TDI, plus four transmissions (two manual and two automatic). Independent four-link front suspension and a semi-independent torsion beam for the 4WD cars and a shiftable manumatic 5-speed trans option brought the car further to the turn of the 21st century with distinction.

The Passat family grew to 13 engine versions by 2001, including the 4.0-liter W8, a new technology (the block was shaped like a "W") being tested in the top-of-range luxe Passat until 2004, when it formally debuted as the W12 in the Volkswagen Phaeton and Audi A8.

K&N 33-2125 air filter for Volkswagen Passat

An engine air filter service is a routine but vital part of ensuring the longevity 71 models of 1996-2005 Passats, yet it is easy, and instructions come in every box.

Still positioned between the Beetle and the Golf/Jetta, the Passat holds down an important people-mover market segment for VW worldwide. Wherever you drive yours, you will be maintaining it on a regular schedule to keep it reliable, which includes an air cleaner service. Replacing the engine air filter is a routine, but vital part of ensuring the longevity of every car. Even with such an array of different engines, these 1996-2005 Passats all share the same air filter, and replacing it is a straightforward task requiring no special tools.

What has been available for some time is a replacement filter that is also easily washable and reusable: the K&N 33-2125 engine air filter. It is a panel style, rectangular cotton gauze filter that brings a greater surface area and increased air flow to the engine. More air to the engine equates to more horsepower and torque for a crisper throttle response in whichever engine version your Passat has. Additionally, the 33-2125's design and engineering provides outstanding protection for the engine. When tested by K&N's in-house laboratory, it worked at 98.73 percent capacity, trapping dangerous particles that could harm the engine.

You may inspect and clean your 33-2125 as often as you wish, but it will last up to 50,000 miles between cleanings, depending on driving conditions. The process is simple and a set of printed instructions accompanies each filter. There are even videos available online to walk you through the simple filter service process.

To clean this filter most efficiently, use the K&N 99-5050 Filter Care Service Kit. Spray with Power Kleen spray; rinse in running water; let it thoroughly air dry, then re-oil it with the Air Cleaner Oil before refitting it to the air box. K&N engine air filters are even warranted for 10 years or 1 million miles, so you won't ever need to buy a new engine air filter for your Passat again.

Your loyalty to your Passat deserves an investment in engine protection from K&N. You can view all the air filters that K&N makes for the VW Passat at the Air Filters for the Volkswagen Passat page. You can view all the K&N performance products for any vehicle by using the Search by Vehicle tool and you can find a local K&N retailer by plugging your location into the K&N Dealer Search as well.

Todd Gilliland Wins the NASCAR K&N Pro Series Race at Iowa Speedway

Todd Gilliland wins the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway

Todd Gilliland won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway. It was his fourth win in the K&N Pro Series this season and the fifth of his career.

Todd Gilliland won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway, leading 114 laps of the Casey's General Store 150, and putting another notch in the belt of West Series teams.

The K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway pits the drivers and teams from the West and East Series. Gilliland, who races for Bill McAnally Racing in the K&N Pro Series West, won his fourth race of the season and the fifth of his career.

"For the 16 car to win here three times in a row I think that really shows that the West is just as good if not the same or better than the East Coast," Gilliland said. "Everyone's been working super hard out there. I think it's a big boost of confidence to everyone out there."

Todd Gilliland won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway leading 114 laps of the Casey's General Store 150.

The K&N Pro Series East had six drivers in the top 10 at the race at Iowa Speedway. The K&N Pro Series West had four drivers in the top 10.

Gilliland started on the front row with pole winner Kyle Benjamin. Benjamin led the first 27 laps of the race before Gilliland past him on lap 28. The two drivers swapped the lead until lap 38, when Gilliland took over for 42 laps.

"It was kind of big tonight to be the leader on the restarts," Gilliland said. "Choose where you want to go and get the jump on them right away. Once you get out to the lead, you can kind of pace yourself out there. I'd say restarts were pretty big out there tonight."

His dad, David Gilliland, a driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, was Todd Gilliland's spotter in the K&N Pro Series race. David Gilliland told his son to be patient on the restarts. The strategy paid off as Todd Gilliland was able to put some distance between his car and the others in the field after every restart.

Kyle Benjamin (40) leads the field at the start of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway. Benjamin won the pole and led the first 27 laps of the race.

"It's always a little bit easier to learn the track when you have a great car right off the trailer," Gilliland said. "I felt that's what kind of helped me. The car was really good. I'd say that's just everyone working together really well. That's what let me move around and find where the car worked best."

Benjamin crossed the finish line in second place and was the first K&N Pro Series East driver. He led 26 laps in the race, but lost the lead on lap 84 to Gilliland. Gilliland led the last 66 laps of the race.

"I knew he would be tough to beat," Benjamin said. "I was tight behind him. I couldn't really do anything with him. He got away from us a little bit."

Benjamin posted his sixth top-five finish of the season in the K&N Pro Series East. He is second in the K&N Pro Series East standings and trails Justin Haley by 32 points after 10 races.

Kyle Benjamin won the pole for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway. It was his fourth pole position of the season and his second in a row.

Gilliland leads the K&N Pro Series standings by three points over Ryan Partridge after eight races. Gilliland has won four K&N Pro Series races and has seven top-five finishes. He also won the K&N Pro Series East season opener at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida. Gilliland has been tough to beat in the K&N Pro Series East and West.

"Once I got behind him, he would just take off and leave us," Benjamin said. "He pinned us down pretty hard on the initial start. Might have been able to do something with him but he was pushing pretty hard getting off on the corner. I couldn't keep my car in line."

Austin Theriault was third overall and the second-place driver from the East Series. He has three top-five finishes in a row and has six top-five finishes in 10 races. He was the runner-up in the K&N Pro Series East race at Columbus Speedway in Ohio and was third at the K&N Pro Series East race at Virginia International Raceway.

The next K&N Pro Series East race is the Bunny Hill Vineyards 100 at Watkins Glen International in New York on Aug. 5. The next K&N Pro Series West race is the Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150 at Evergreen Speedway in Washington on Aug. 13.

Custom 1967 Chevy Camaro Top Level Pro Street Touring Build

1967 Camaro in the California High Desert

Doug’s 1967 Camaro when it was rescued from the California High Desert

Widened wheel tubs for 1967 Camaro

Beautifully hand-formed widened wheel tubs for 1967 Camaro.

It had been sitting in the high desert of California for who knows how long. The front clip and subframe had been long ago stripped off the car. Oddly it had the words "Doug’s Car" spray-painted on the driver’s door. But both the owner (not Doug) and the potential buyer who came to see it knew it wasn’t a candidate for the scrap pile. After all, it was a completely solid, rust-free 1967 Camaro tub. Rodger Lee of Ironworks Speed and Kustom in Bakersfield, California, towed it home, thinking that he’d do a quick rebuild and make a few bucks.

1967 Camaro SpeedTech front subframe with front suspension

The SpeedTech front subframe with front suspension, sprung with RideTech coilovers with Ron Sutton “Secret Sauce High Grip” valving

"Doug’s Car" sat in the shop for about 18 months when one of his best customers, Greg Heinrich of Fairyway Chevrolet, heard about the car. He challenged Rodger to turn "Doug’s Car" into a something amazing. And that’s how this once almost discarded shell went from bare metal, to a down-and-dirty street car project, and finally to one of the finest Pro Touring cars under construction.

Rodger named the car the Fairway 1967 Camaro, after Heinrich’s dealership, as he had with his previous project for this customer, the Fairway 55. He said he likes the idea of naming it after the customer’s Chevrolet dealership, rather than some bird of prey or made up name, as to him it evokes the likes of Yenko Chevrolet, a Pennsylvania car dealership that modified already hot Chevys in the ‘60s and added its name to the car.

Powering the Fairway is an LT4 crate motor identical to that installed in the 2015 Corvette Z06. This engine is normally installed in the most powerful production car Chevrolet has ever made-the LT4 supercharged 6.2L V8 small-block. The LT4 utilizes technologies first seen in the 2014 Corvette’s LT1 Gen-V small block, including direct injection and continuously variable valve timing, while leaping over the supercharger technology on the previous-generation Corvette ZR1’s LS9 engine. The engine is capable of producing at least 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, breathing through a K&N RC-4680 tapered air filter. Rodger believes this is the first installation of an LT4 in a Generation One Camaro.

Some of the undercar details of the yet unfinished Fairway Camaro are a SpeedTech front subframe and front and rear suspension, RideTech coilovers with Ron Sutton "Secret Sauce High Grip" valving, Wilwood disc brakes with calipers color-matched to the calipers of a Porsche 919, Forgeline 19×11" and 19×12.5" monoblock wheels, one-of-a kind aluminum rear spoiler, a custom front valance that’s been dropped 1.5" and a unique front spoiler.

Exhaust outlets being fabricated

Fabricated aluminum rear spoiler

Absolutely unique rear spoiler cost $5000 to fabricate in aluminum

Power is managed by a T56 Magnum Transmission, originally designed for the Dodge Viper. Headers are 100% in-house constructions while the rest of the exhaust is custom-built around Magnaflow components and spent gases exit the car through unique outlets fitted to the rear quarter panels. Inside the car is a special Dakota Digital dash and a four-point roll cage to keep everyone safe. On the exterior, Rodger gave the world a glimpse of the car in bare metal and pretty much wowed anyone who say the images. It’s now begun the transition to Corvette Arctic White, which will come in stages over the next few months.

Look for the final version of The Fairway 1967 Camaro aka "Doug’s Car" to break cover sometime in January.

1994-2005 Audi A4, A6, S4, RS, Quattro, and Allroad Have One K&N Filter In Common

K&N Replacement Air Filter 33-2125

K&N's 33-2125 air filter is made from a durable cotton gauze, designed and engineered to provide greater surface area for better filtering capabilities and more air flow than a stock paper filter.

If you are a loyal Audi driver, you may have owned several of this, the world's best engineered, most stylish, expertly built and distinctively detailed luxury passenger car and sport sedan.

You appreciate what your Audi can do for you daily and what it has done globally on road and track. You may follow Audi in GT (Gran Turismo) Racing, DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) touring car series, LeMans and the World Endurance Championship, or the TT Cup with a sense of belonging as a member of the fraternity of Audi. The engineering successes and innovations derived from the Audi racing program are passed along to the passenger cars to make them superior road-going vehicles that you may simply love for your uses and always bring you home.

You are part of a legendary automotive institution and your cars have been honored on many occasions in many designations. Between its inception in 2004 (for a 2005 award) and 2016, the World Car of the Year awards named Audi to winning positions eight times in three categories, starting with 2005 when the A6 was the very first World Car of the Year. Numerous international juries, automotive journals and motoring marketplaces recognize Audi excellence annually. Recently the industry publication Auto Test named the Q7 3.0 TDI Quattro its 2016 Overall Winner and the A6 Avant 2.0 TDI was Best Upper Midsize Car for innovation, technology and efficiency. The 65-member panel for the International Engine of the Year award voted the Audi 2.5 TFSI engine (in the RS Q3) its 2016 winner. The accolades can fill several pages of this website.

K&N Replacement Air Filter Box

The same rectangular, open-top air box design allows the K&N 33-2125 replacement air filter to fit more than 170 Audi models built between 1994 and 2005

Suffice it to say, if you own an Audi from any year, you and your car are winners. But if you have an early car, you are fortunate indeed. Be it an early 1994 A4 with the new Supertouring Car-derived 1.8-liter 20-valve engine; a first-generation Quattro that debuted Audi's adjustable air suspension system; a big 2004 Quattro V8, or maybe a 1999 RennSport, your car shares a power plant with sophisticated air induction and filter components with 170+ others built between 1994 and 2005.

To be driving and enjoying one of these 1994 to 2005 examples, you have taken special care to keep it road-worthy. Part of that attention to maintenance detail includes regular service of the engine air intake filter, which you have been dutifully replacing on schedule. But there is a better way to keep your Audi's engine airways clear, and that is with the K&N 33-2125 washable, reusable replacement air filter.

While these Audi engines have been developed and modified nearly annually, their air intake engineering has kept much of the same specifications, allowing one air filter to be appropriate for these cars for just over a decade. All the models listed below can be fitted with the same 33-2125 panel style, open-top, rectangular cotton gauze filter that actually provides greater filter surface area and increased air flow to the engine. The filter is designed to provide more horsepower and torque for crisper throttle response, a plus for any iteration of any marque.

Add to these three advantages the fact that the K&N air filter is washable, reusable and warranted for 10 years or 1 million miles, so you won't ever need to buy a new engine air filter again.

The recommended cleaning interval of the 33-2125 is up to 50,000 miles, depending on driving conditions. The filter is cleaned and re-oiled using the 99-5000 air filter cleaning kit.

Your investment in Audi excellence deserves a matching investment in excellent engine protection from K&N. To source a K&N replacement air filter for your vehicle, use K&N's online Search by Vehicle tool. To purchase, please visit an authorized K&N dealer, who can be found in nearly every quadrant of the globe using the K&N Dealer Search.
