How A Reusable K&N Air Filter Can Make Your Hybrid Or Plug-In Hybrid Even Greener

Regardless if you purchased your Hybrid or a Plug-in Hybrid, also known as a PHEV, to save money or to help the environment, we have yet another way to do both. K&N air filters exceed the lifespan of the standard OEM paper filter by as much as 30 times. Why is that important? If everyone with a Hybrid were to replace and discard their air filters at the intervals recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, usually about 30,000 miles, it would add 1.6 million dirty, oily, non-recyclable air filters to landfills across the country.

K&N air filters and cabin air filters feature a 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty, and require only simple, do-it-yourself cleaning after each 100,000 miles of travel. How is this possible? Unlike paper air filters, which have a short service life due to their tendency to "surface load" (i.e. collect all dust and dirt on the outside surface so they quickly become inefficient), K&N Filters are designed to "depth load" in other words they use the entire depth of the filter to scrub the air going into your engine. K&N replacement air filters are manufactured with several layers of cotton filter material that's been made tacky by an application of special filter oil.

The oiled cotton filter creates a maze for dust, dirt, and debris, but that allows air to flow freely though the filter media. The contaminants are captured through the application of three scientific principles. The first of these is interception, where the larger particles stick to the fibers, the filter oil acting as an adhesive.

The second is impaction, where heavier particles are captured when they break off from the air stream and run straight into the fibers.

Small particles do not follow the air stream, but rather tumble along randomly and collide with the filter's fibers. This phenomenon, called diffusion, enables a K&N air filter to capture dirt particles much smaller than the openings in the filter media itself.

3. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

The hybrid version of the popular Toyota Rav4 was introduced as recently as the 2015 model year, but proved to be so popular with hybrid buyers that it challenged the supremacy of the Prius on the Toyota showroom floor. The fact that the Hybrid upgrade was only a few hundred dollars more than a regular RAV4 certainly didn't hurt.

4. Ford C-Max Hybrid

Ford developed the C-Max Hybrid with the goal of becoming "America's most affordable hybrid utility vehicle." The five-door MPV offers decent cargo space, particularly when the third row of seats are folded flat. Taking the eco theme further, the fabrics used in the SE version of the C-Max Hybrid are from recycled and renewable resources.

Jessy Harris Overcomes Guillain-Barre Syndrome to Thrive in Dirt Bike and Off-Road Events

Jessy Harris grew up as a tomboy in her youth so she fits in perfectly in the automotive industry

Lightning never strikes the same place twice, but Jessy Harris is electric enough to maintain two titles: model and mogul. This tech-savvy vixen has weathered enough storms in life to make success in the modeling industry look breezy. Jessy was born in San Francisco, California. She grew up in the Bay Area with three older brothers and to this day, she claims, “Family is one of the most important things to me. I always strive to make them my number one.”

Jessy’s family influenced her life tremendously. With three brothers, she became a bit of a tomboy. The siblings would go on adventures together “camping, boating and dirt biking.” These outings shaped Jessy’s personality, and she developed a distinct passion for dirt biking. Jessy says, “It was my way of releasing stress and escaping reality. With this being my favorite sport, it pushed me further in this industry. Modeling for K&N, Harley Davidson, Kawasaki and Mazda Raceway gave me VIP access to every event I would attend in my spare time.” She effectively combined passion with profession, landing coveted spots on some of the hottest raceways in sports.

Jessy began modeling when she was 21 years old. A friend referred her to an agency, and she landed her first job in San Diego. She worked a few more modeling gigs but eventually “took on a full time job traveling for a company coordinating events for the building of off-road events.” Jessy was excited for this new career opportunity. Little did she know, a storm was brewing on the horizon.

Jessy landed a last minute spot for the K&N calendar shoot with a pair of RSD Indian motorcycles

She remembers, “I fell ill with a virus called Guillain Barre Syndrome. Within 24 hours I was completely paralyzed with the doctors telling my family and me that it could last for 3 months to 2 years. After 3 months in ICU and another 5 at an acute rehab center, I was finally released to outpatient therapy.” After all her body had been through, Jessy was nervous about taking on a full time job. Because of this, modeling came back into her life. A flexible profession, it was perfect.

The traumatic event which paralyzed her body in fact catalyzed her career, and so goes the silver lining. Jessy recounts, “Things really took off for me after that. Harley Davidson took an interest in my work ethic and started flying me out to their shows.” This was the tip of the iceberg, and a whirlwind of modeling opportunities came pouring in.

Cue K&N. Jessy remembers, “I was connected to the Marketing Manager at K&N through one of the companies I worked for called R1Concepts. They needed a model last minute, and I was able to swing it with my schedule to do their calendar shoot.” This twist of fate became a gem of a memory for Jessy — “I absolutely love working with K&N. They’re always professional and take care of their models. My favorite memory with K&N was doing the calendar shoot on a one of a kind Indian motorcycle.”

Jessy was chosen as an official Mazda Raceway Girl for the 2016 Superbike World Championship

Jessy has conquered the modeling world, but now, she maintains a position as an event coordinator in Los Angeles. Both careers require poise; in each, the best possible outcome can only be achieved with positivity and commitment. Looking forward, Jessy is ecstatic about starting a family with her husband — “Modeling has taken a backseat, and we're expecting a little girl!” She isn’t sure if she’ll rejoin the industry, but the possibility is there. Jessy admits, “Modeling is work. These jobs don't come easy, and it's a constant competition between you and the girl next to you.”

It can be cutthroat, but it can also be spectacular. With clients like K&N and Harley Davidson, Jessy is able to make money and gain access to events like the “summer & winter X Games, even Daytona 500.” Last year, she was chosen as an official Mazda Raceway Girl for the Superbike World Championship—an event held at Laguna Seca Raceway. Here, she got up close and personal with premier access to the track. Right in the middle of the action, she “experienced riders fly by or stop at the pits.” Modeling is a job, sometimes a grueling one, but it can also be a vessel to endless opportunity in the world of sports and racing. Jessy finishes, “It's not all rainbows and sunshine like it seems, but looking back now, it was all worth it. I've made lifelong friends and irreplaceable memories.”

If you own a 2017 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and Challenger SRT Hellcat you already know that either version will outperform every single Muscle Car built in the 1960s. But of course, despite the fact that the Hellcats generate 707 horsepower, there's always an interest in adding more. That's why K&N developed the 69-2553TTK Typhoon air intake system that adds an estimated 23.59 horsepower at the rear wheels.

The 6.2L Hemi is a completely redesigned engine. Although the combustion chamber is not a pure hemisphere, due to a better understanding of intake and exhaust airflow, as well as the addition of a second spark plug, it most definitely deserves to wear the Hemi name. In fact, in NHRA Top Fuel racing the Generation II 426ci Hemi design that powers those 300 mph missiles features a similar combustion chamber shape and dual spark plugs.

For the Hellcat (named after the WWII-era Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter aircraft), SRT developed a unique version of the Generation III Hemi engine. It features the same 103.9 mm bore as the 6.4L 392ci Hemi and an induction-hardened forged-steel crankshaft that determines the 90.9 mm stroke, for a total displacement of 6.2L.

The block has been modified for heavy-duty use. The 9.5:1 compression ratio is reflective of the supercharged intake system, which is comprised of a 2.4L twin-screw IHI supercharger with integrated air-liquid intercoolers that can move 1,060 cubic feet of air per minute. In other words, it can suck all the air out of 10'x12'x9' room in one minute. Each Supercharged 6.2L V-8 receives a 42-minute dyno run at a maximum of 5200 rpm at 90% load before it's installed in an SRT Hellcat.

Cool air makes more power than hot air. So does increased air flow. The key is to draw larger volumes of fresh, clean air directly from outside the vehicle, and then isolate it from high underhood temperatures. With the K&N 69-2553TTK Typhoon air intake system, intake air first enters a 7.5-inch high-flow air filter sited within a heat shield that's installed into the original air box location.

Much of the horsepower gain can be attributed to the RF-1041 oversized conical air filter manufactured from multiple layers of oiled cotton filter media -- which offers less resistance than traditional paper filters. The multi-layered red cotton material utilizes three scientific principles to effectively trap harmful dirt and dust. One is interception, another is impaction, and the third is diffusion. The performance of each filter design is verified through K&N's in-house testing lab, which adheres to ISO 5011 standards, ensuring that your K&N filter provides high airflow without putting engine protection at risk.

The filtered air is then directed through a black powdercoated mandrel bent aluminum tube into the engine's throttle body. The intake tube includes fittings for the factory intake air temperature sensor and crank case vent hose.

Dynamometer testing verified an increase from 621.05 horsepower to 644.64 horsepower, as measured at the drive wheels, on the same 2017 Dodge Charger Hellcat on the same day, with the only change being the installation of a K&N 69-2553TTK Typhoon air intake system.

NASCAR K&N Pro Series West rookie Will Rodgers was the runner-up in the race at Sonoma Raceway

NASCAR K&N Pro Series West rookie Will Rodgers is coming off his best finish of the season. He came in second in the race at Sonoma Raceway. He and NASCAR Monster Energy driver Kevin Harvick battled for the lead over the final laps of the race. At one point, Rodgers and Harvick had a nine-second lead over the rest of the field.

“It’s more than I expected overall,” said Rodgers who drives for Jefferson Pitts Racing. “Friday when we showed up, we unloaded off the truck really well. The car did exactly what I wanted it to do. We made a few tiny adjustments. But ultimately went back to the setup we unloaded with off the truck for the race. Obviously it worked out really well.”

Rodgers has put together an impressive rookie season. He won the pole at Sonoma Raceway. He is in fourth place in the K&N Pro Series West standings after eight races. He has five top-five finishes and is in prime position to win the rookie of the year. He is third in the rookie standings, one point behind Kody Vanderwal and eight points behind Derek Kraus.

“As far as experience goes, I have experience in five different types of motorsports,” Rodgers said. “Sonoma was my 13th stock car race ever. I have zero late model experience or modifieds. I jumped immediately from sports car racing into full-blown stock cars.”

Rodgers started the season with a string of top-five finishes. He opened the season in Arizona with a fifth-place finish in the K&N Pro Series West race at Tucson Speedway in March. He followed with a third-place finish at Kern County Raceway Park in California five days later. He posted a pair of fifth-place finishes at Irwindale Speedway.

“This is the first time I’ve been to all of these tracks except Sonoma,” Rodgers said. “Our first time to Kern County, again we unloaded off the truck and the car just fired off exactly how we wanted it to. We made little adjustments again and improved it. We did maximize the equipment when we were there.

“We have the potential to do well on these circuits too. That was definitely one that stood out. Those were kind of our best finishes of the year. That was a great week for us.”

He hit a bit of a road bump in May. He was 19th in the K&N Pro Series West race at Spokane County Raceway in Washington and 20th in the race at Orange Show Speedway in California. He moved back into the top 10 at Colorado National Speedway in June when he was ninth.

“The last three oval races didn’t show what we wanted,” Rodgers said. “Those three races were kind of a bummer. That was kind of the slump in our season. That’s how it goes sometimes.”

The 22-year-old from Murrieta, California, has a diverse racing career. He won a Hawaii state go-karting championship in 2005. He has raced in motocross, off-road trucks, UTVs, and road racing cars. He competed in the Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car series before moving to stock cars and NASCAR.

His trip to Sonoma Raceway's 1.99-mile road course was not his first. It is why he was so successful on the difficult track. The field included Daniel Suarez and Ryan Blaney, drivers from the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series. Rodgers kept his car in front of Suarez and Blaney for the entire race.

“To put my name in front of guys like Kevin Harvick, Suarez, and Blaney was pretty awesome,” Rodgers said. “The weekend started off really well that way. It was definitely the highlight of the year so far. It was pretty great.”

Chasing down Harvick was another story. While Rodgers was able to keep pace with the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion, he wasn’t able to pass him. Still, bringing the car home in second place was quite an accomplishment and a much needed boost after a little slump the past couple of weeks.

“Through those laps, I kind of settled in behind Kevin and I knew the laps were clicking down and we had to make a move,” Rodgers said. “The caution before I kind of figured out where I was faster than Kevin and where he was faster than me. Those last few laps I tried to utilize that. I made a few little mistakes, Kevin did as well. That allowed me to, on the last lap, get right on his bumper and challenge him. I ultimately decided not to make the move that would have been controversial, I guess, in turn 11. We poked our nose in there, but I decided I’m going to race this guy exactly how I want to be raced. He’s a Cup champion, he’s the kind of guy that likes to race people clean and when other people don’t race him clean, he doesn’t take it kindly.

“I think we made the right decision. That was definitely worth it.”

The next race for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series is at Iowa Speedway. It will pit the drivers and teams from the K&N Pro Series East and West in the same race.

“We’re going to be able to adapt quickly,” Rodgers said. “My hope is that we finish top five overall. I think we’re going to be able to do that as long as we don’t have any issues early on.”
