TORC PRO Lights Racer Andrew Carlson Crashes Out At ERX Motorpark in Elk River, MN

2017 is Carlson Moto's first full season in TORC after many years in SnoCross

Andrew's flip caught on video shows him digging and executing a quarter flip, landing on his wheels

With PRO Light points leader Casey Currie otherwise occupied, K&N racer Andrew Carlson was handed a golden opportunity to move up in the championship order at the Twin Cities Takedown, round three of the TORC series. As the air temperature reached the mid-90s, the stage was set for the 14-lap PRO Light final.

And it’s on familiar ground for Andrew that the race was held. His father, Chris, co-owns the ERX Motor Park facility, its one-mile track praised for its design including challenging terrain, use of natural elevation changes, a mixture of soils, and multiple lines. And for the TORC Series event, sand was blended into the soil to allow the surface to change and become more technical throughout the race.

Andrew qualified well, taking the outside pole beside Kyle Kleiman. Kyle got the jump on Andrew at the start, and the duo broke free from the field and proceeded to set and reset the fastest times of the race as they battled for position. Soon Andrew took the lead with a well-timed move to the inside line in the come-back turn after the finish line jump.

With his hometown fans cheering him on, it looked as if Andrew might drive away for the second PRO Light win of his nascent career, but Kyle saw things differently. Just a lap prior to the mid-race competition caution, Kyle regained the lead. He did so by diving through the huge braking bump moguls that had been dug-in over the course of the race at the entrance to the high-banked “Talladega Turn” to take the lead going into the caution. This set-up a dash for the finish the moment the drivers took the green.

Not giving up easily Andrew pressed hard right from the restart, diving deep into the corners while searching for the smallest of openings. Unfortunately, Andrew caught a rut on the entrance to the Talledega Turn and launched into a quarter-turn cartwheel. Though he landed on his tires and drove away, the truck was clearly tweaked, and missing most of its bodywork, and Andrew’s chance at another hometown win had ended.

“The braking bumps coming into that corner were huge,” said Andrew after the race. “I got a little aggressive coming in and caught a rut. I’m obviously disappointed, but we learn from our mistakes. We’ll go back to the hauler and regroup.”

Carlson Moto is preparing for the next round at the famous track in Crandon, WI

The Carlson Moto team is seeking more podiums this season after Andrew's breakthough win last year

The crash allowed Kyle to run away for the win, with Chad Rayford second and Shawn Morris third.

“We were racing about as tight as you could get,” Andrew explained. “My truck was working flawlessly. Whether I took the high line or protected the inside, it didn’t seem to matter, it would rotate and my Atturo tires would hook-up.”

Unfortunately, Andrew’s shot at redemption will have to wait another day. With a Sunday morning storm knocking out power to the track came safety concerns for racers and fans which prompted TORC Series officials to postpone the race.

In terms of the season-long points chase, Andrew leaves ERX fifth in points, but just three points out of third in a very tight grouping. Leading the PRO Lights points chase is Kyle Kleiman with brother Cody second. Chad Rayford is third with fellow K&N racer Cam Reimers in fourth.

Andrew and the Carlson Moto are now hard at preparations for Rounds Five and Six at the Big House Brawl at the famed Crandon, Wisconsin track.

“We didn’t really have anything handed to us; we had some good matchups all day,” Laughlin said. “I definitely feel like I had a point to prove. We have a competitive car on the starting line. I came into this weekend with the confidence to win.”

Before defeating Butner in the final round, Laughlin flew past Alan Johnson and the No.1 qualifier Jeg Coughlin as well as rookie Tanner Gray. Making his fourth final round appearance, Butner was racing against two-time Pro Stock champion Erica Enders in the semifinals.

Clay Millican, the Top Fuel winner, raced to a 3.825-second pass at 316.38 mph beating Leah Pritchett who raced a 3.881 seconds at 307.09 mph in her Papa John’s dragster. Millican posted his first Top Fuel win in his career in front of a hometown crowd in Bristol. Millican is the 103rd different driver to win in Top Fuel.

“I love what I do,” Millican said. “There were times I ever wondered if this was going to happen. I don’t deserve this credit. I’m really happy for David Grubnic and all of the boys who work on this car and I mean that one hundred percent."

On his way to the finals Millican fought past Kyle Wurtzel, Brittany Force and Steve Torrence. Before being defeated by Millican, Pritchett was up against Troy Coughlin Jr., Scott Palmer and Shawn Langdon. With his fifth victory this season, defending Funny Car champion Ron Capps in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T raced against his teammate Jack Beckman in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T with a pass of 4.054 at 317.05 mph to Beckman’s 4.040-second run.

“We’ve gotten a few lucky rounds, but it’s been preparation in the off season,” Capps said. “We had runs on Sunday against four of the toughest cars, drivers and crew chiefs combined. You read down the list of people we had to beat in a new car that was prepared. There are not very many teams that are that prepared to pull a car out and have a quicker set-up than we were.”

Each winning the most Funny Car Victories at Bristol Drag way Capps ties John Force with winning four.

Eggleston Wins Second Consecutive K&N Pro Series West Race at Colorado Speedway

Chris Eggleston won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Colorado National Speedway

Chris Eggleston won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Colorado National Speedway, his second in a row and third of the season. Eggleston won the pole and took the lead for good after a restart with 14 laps to go.

Eggleston and Bill McAnally Racing teammate Todd Gilliland battled for the lead throughout the race. Gilliland, the leader in the K&N Pro Series West standings, led for a race-high 85 laps. Eggleston led for 64 laps, but was able to move out front for the final 14.

“Todd had really good short-run speed,” Eggleston said. “We did everything we could to keep pace with him. It seemed like he was able to stretch it easier and that we were using our stuff just trying to keep up with him.”

Eggleston led the first 11 laps of the race. He and Gilliland swapped the lead until lap 100. Eggleston was out front for 36 laps until rookie Derek Kraus took over for one lap. It was back to Gilliland and Eggleston for the remainder of the NAPA/Toyota 150.

Eggleston won the K&N Pro Series West season opener at Tucson Speedway in March. He won the race at Orange Show Speedway in California on May 20.

“We were able to get the balance back in our race car on the long runs,” Eggleston said. “At about the halfway mark, it seemed like Todd was getting a little snug and we were able to catch him. We started searching around and found a little bit of speed on the top side. Once we started rolling the top, we were able to get a fender on him on the outside and get by.”

Knaus held on for second place in the K&N Pro Series West race at Colorado. Gilliland was third, giving Bill McAnally Racing a podium sweep.

“That just shows how hard we work in the shop and how these guys work their tails off to get these cars prepared,” Knaus said. “Even in the offseason, they’re working, building new cars, getting all our stuff better than what we had it last year.”

Knaus and Gilliland made contact in the final laps. Gilliland, who won four races in a row, leads the K&N Pro Series West standings by seven points over Eggleston after seven races.

“It does sting a little bit to be leading like that and just use the tires up a little bit too much,” Gilliland said. “Chris Eggleston, he probably has thousands of laps here, he’s always really stout when we come here. We just gotta keep looking ahead, I’m really excited about the tracks we’re coming up to, Sonoma, on the west. Just keep looking forward.”

Gracin Raz finished fourth in the race at Colorado, followed by rookie Kody Vanderwal in fifth.

The next K&N Pro Series West race is at Sonoma Raceway in California.

“All day long I was confident because we have historically done well in Englishtown, since I have won here twice and don’t have that chip on my shoulder,” Torrence said. “Both Antron and I have cars that can win and we know we just have to do our jobs to win. I know my record against him isn’t the best, but it’s always fun to go up against one of my best friends in the final round.”

Torrence won back-to-back events in Charlotte and Atlanta six weeks ago. He was the second fastest qualifier at New Jersey and beat Smax Smith, Clay Millican, and Doug Kalitta before meeting Brown in the final. Brown, the No. 1 qualifier, reached the final round for the fifth time this season.

Brown moved into first place in the NHRA Top Fuel standings. He has a seven-point lead over Torrence after 10 events. Leah Pritchett, who came into the races at New Jersey as the leader in the Top Fuel standings, fell to third after a first-round exit.

This was Beckman’s first final-round appearance since St. Louis in 2016. Capps, Beckman’s teammate and reigning Funny Car champion, reached his sixth final round of the year after beating Del Worsham, Alexis DeJoria, and Robert Hight.

He is 36 points behind Eddie Krawiec, the leader in the Pro Stock Motorcycle standings. LE Tonglet is second in the Pro Stock Motorcycle standings, two points behind Krawiec. K&N to Team Up With Fallen Patriots to Sponsor the 20th Annual Route 66 Nationals

K&N will be sponsoring the 20th Annual NHRA Route 66 Nationals with Fallen Patriots

K&N will be sponsoring the 20th Annual NHRA Route 66 Nationals with Fallen Patriots

NHRA recently announced that K&N will be a sponsor of the 20th Annual NHRA Route 66 Nationals, in Joliet, Illinois. This will be the second consecutive year that K&N has signed on to be a sponsor of the event. This year, however, K&N is bringing their primary charity partner aboard, the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, who will be the title sponsor and K&N will be the presenting sponsor.

NHRA and K&N have enjoyed a rewarding relationship for years and this is an extension of that partnership. From sponsoring various drivers in just about every NHRA class to being the spec’d intake for the Pro Stock class, K&N has been involved in NHRA in one capacity or another for decades. Thanks to such a long history of working together, this newest partnership makes sense for both participants. The fact that K&N is including their charity partner in this deal shows how much they care about their relationships.

Earlier this year, K&N donated $100,000 to Fallen Patriots and made them their primary charity partner

“Our partnership with NHRA has been rewarding for both sides,” explained K&N’s Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Jesse Spungin. “Not only is K&N the official filter and air intake of NHRA, but now we are a sponsor of one of the biggest races of the year.”

Earlier this year, K&N announced they would be working with the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation as their primary charity partner. Fallen Patriots’ mission is to provide college scholarships and educational counseling to the children of military members who died in the line of duty. K&N bringing them in as the title sponsor of this race will help to spread awareness and the need for funding for Fallen Patriots.

“Fallen Patriots is proud to partner with K&N, NHRA, and Route 66 Raceway for the historic 20th Annual Route 66 Nationals,” said David Kim, Co-Founder and CEO of Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation. “The entire foundation is excited to share our mission of providing scholarships and educational counseling to children of fallen patriots with NHRA fans. With nearly 20,000 children across the nation who are still in need of future assistance, we greatly appreciate this opportunity to further our mission of supporting the families who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”

This year’s 20th Annual Children of Fallen Patriots NHRA Route 66 Nationals Presented by K&N will be held at the state-of-the-art Route 66 Raceway, just south of Joliet, Illinois. Located adjacent to its sister track, Chicagoland Speedway, Route 66 Raceway is regarded as one of the world’s premier drag racing facilities.

“Route 66 Raceway has long been one of the premiere facilities that NHRA races at during the course of the year and we anxiously await the Children of Fallen Patriots NHRA Route 66 Nationals presented by K&N,” said Brad Gerber, NHRA Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “K&N and NHRA have been partners for many years, and it is great to see them team up with the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation for this race to help spread awareness for their important cause.”
