The annual desert race, the Mint 400, is once again upon us. This year K&N is an official sponsor of the great American off-road race. The race itself is held in the desert outside of Primm, Nevada, however there is a whole lot more to this than just the 400-mile race. Kicking things off on Wednesday is the 4 Wheel Parts vehicle procession powered by Odyssey Batteries. Here you can see the 350 race trucks, buggies, and UTVs make their way down the heart of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Strip to Fremont street. After that is the official Mint 400 kick-off party sponsored by Atomic Liquors.

On Thursday, there are several events happening on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas. The Method Race Wheels time trials kick things off, followed by the Rugged Radios meet and greet, where you can get autographs from some of your favorite drivers. Throughout the day there will be plenty to do and see. Later that day will be the Method Race Wheels pit crew challenge. Where you see the pit crews competing against each other in a battle against the clock and each other.

Swing by the K&N booth to grab an autograph, check out our new products, or just to say hi. Following that is the Mint 400 meet and greet.

Saturday is the day of reckoning. The Limited Race kicks off bright and early at 6 am. As they begin returning around noon, the Unlimited Race heads out. The Sky's The Limit For Hybrid Off-Road/Aircraft Vehicle

The off-road portion of the SkyRunner is powered by a Polaris Prostar engine.

A Polaris Prostar 952cc SOHC v-Twin Engine powers the off-road vehicle portion of the SkyRunner

The thrill of riding an off-road vehicle through the roughest of terrain should make any extreme sport enthusiast flush with excitement. Add the ability for an off-road vehicle to take to the sky, then that must be a dream for that previously mentioned extreme sportster.

There is a vehicle that can do just that. It’s called the SkyRunner and it’s from the imagination of Stewart Hamel, CEO of SkyRunner in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The inspiration for the SkyRunner was a skydiving accident during which Hamel dislocated his arm and was forced to give up his skydiving hobby. He used to skydive every weekend.

“I had suffered a posterior dislocation of my arm. As a result, it kept popping out whenever I was stabilized during a skydive,” he said.

Hamel has been working on the machine for about four years.

“It was originally supposed to be a personal toy for my kids and I to ride at my ranch in Colorado,” said Hamel. “Something I could drive around and fly around the property. As a pilot I respected the safety record of the parafoil wing. Little did I know there was a demand by so many for a powersport aircraft. I got a lot of feedback from operators and special forces.”

Due to all the interest, Hamel hired some off-road and aviation consultants and he got some money from his own small private capital venture company and started developing the vehicle.

He established a Facebook page that attracted more feedback and things just started to come together.

“I listened to people who were interested in the project’s values. Some individuals wanted a toy and then there were some who saw it as a tool. This group included ranchers and government agencies. What they wanted was something that was simple, redundant, versatile, low maintenance and serviceable,” said Hamel.

Putting a lot of emphasis on the serviceability, Hamel searched out an off-road brand that had dealerships all over the world so a person could drop the vehicle off somewhere convenient to be serviced and where they could go to buy parts when they needed them. Hamel noted that the vehicle has 38 parts. He aligned the project with Polaris, an off-road vehicle manufacturer with more than 1800 dealerships around the world and Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), a multinational aerospace and transportation company that manufactures Rotax, the most popular light-sport aircraft engine in the world. Hamel noted that the post-sale experience and convenient serviceability would be important to customers.

The aircraft portion of the SkyRunner is powered by a Bombardier Rotax 4-cylinder engine.

A Bombardier Rotax turbocharged 121cc 4-cylinder engine runs the aircraft portion of the SkyRunner

He used the same philosophy to source out other parts for the vehicle and that is when he selected K&N to provide the ground engine’s air filters.

The SkyRunner uses two K&N RC-1200 universal clamp-on air filters on the ground engine.

“K&N products are all over the place,” Hamel said. “I am also familiar with them because they are heavily involved in off-roading, which is a big part of the recreation that takes place in this part of the country. I also have K&N filters in my personal truck,” he said.

The SkyRunner is an off-road vehicle similar to what one would see competing at the Baja 1000 race. It features a 74-inch wheelbase, a total length of 156-inches, height of 75-inches and width of 73-inches. It includes a Polaris Prostar 952cc SOHC v-Twin engine for ground transportation in front and a Bombardier Rotax turbocharged 1211cc 4-cylinder engine for flying in the rear.

The Prostar produces 89-horsepower and the Rotax offers 115-horsepower.

Maximum ground cruising speed is 70 mph and maximum air cruising speed is 40 mph. Maximum ground range is 240 miles and maximum air range is 120 miles. It needs 450 feet to takeoff and 400 feet to land. It has a restricted operating altitude of 10,000-feet.

It has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) S-LSA approval. This means SkyRunner can be manufactured and sold ready-to-fly direct from the factory, rather than assembled by the owner as a kit.

The vehicle seats two. Ground instrumentation is on the right side of the steering wheel and aircraft instrumentation is on the left side. So whether you wish to drive or fly, one simple sequence works for both – 1) Flip 2) Start 3) Engage.

Each engine operates independently and so only one engine is needed at a time.

Hamel noted that ranchers, people, and companies that need an aircraft to fly short range, border security agencies, and, of course, people looking for a personal toy are buying it. The price is $139,000.

Hamel added that SkyRunner is creating its own dealer network.

“We’re getting dealer interest in Alaska, Southern California, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, and Orlando,” said Hamel.

Most of the interest in the United States is coming from the south and west, noted Hamel.

The SkyRunner includes two K&N RC-1200 Universal Clamp-on Air Filters.

“We’ve had people from the northeast come and take a look, but there are not a lot of places in that location to fly it,” he said.

Hamel expects to deliver 700 vehicles each year globally within the next four years.

“Currently, we’re building four units per month with a production capacity for 10. The hallmark of our production is our quality control and ability to scale production. In four months and nine new employees, we can grow from 10 to 20 aircraft per month,” said Hamel.

The SkyRunner vehicle is manufactured in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Hamel added that some options are becoming available including hubs and titanium brake rotors. He pointed out that the company will be launching its own adventure gear and apparel in March.

K&N Air Filter for 2017 Hyundai Elantra Enhances Airflow

The K&N 33-5050 air filter is designed for the 2017 Hyundai Elantra.

The K&N 33-5050 air filter is designed to fit into the factory air box of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra.

After it acquired 51% of rival Kia Motors, the second largest auto manufacturer in Korea, The Hyundai Motor Group became the largest automaker in Korea, the second largest automaker in Asia and the fourth largest automobile manufacturer in the world.

One of Hyundai’s most popular models, the Elantra, is a four-door compact sedan that debuted in 1990.

A Mitsubishi-designed 1.6-liter straight-four DOHC 16-valve engine was used to power the first generation (1990-1995) model. It produced 113 horsepower (84 kW) at 6,000 rpm and accelerated from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. Hyundai claimed that the car’s top speed was 116 mph (187 km/h).

Other engines that powered the first incarnation of the Elantra include a 1.5-liter I4 and a 1.8-liter I4 gasoline engines. Two transmissions were available –- a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.

Now in its sixth generation (2016-present), the Elantra is available with a choice of four gasoline and one diesel engines –- a 1.4-liter Kappa I4, a 1.6-liter Gamma I4, 1.6-liter Gamma G4FJ I4 turbocharged and a 2.0-liter Nu I4 rounds out the gasoline version and a 1.6-liter U2 I4 turbocharged is the only diesel-powered engine. There are three transmissions –- a 6-speed automatic, 6-speed manual, and a 7-speed DCT.

The K&N 33-5050 replacement air filter is designed to enhance the airflow as well as the protection of the engines in the Elantra regardless of whether it is the 1.4-liter or the 2.0-liter that is powering it.

The filter features a multilayered cotton gauze media that has been treated with a special grade of filter oil, which makes the strands of the cotton gauze very sticky. This permits the media to catch and hold contaminant particles. The filter is also washable and reusable and lasts up to 50,000 miles between cleanings.

The K&N 33-5050 air filter measures 1" high, 9-1/2" long and a little less than 6-1/2&

The K&N 33-5050 air filter is only 1" high.

K&N also offers the 99-5000 filter care service kit that is formulated to clean and recharge the filter so that it can perform for another 50,000 miles and can be used over and over again. In fact, the air filter will perform for as long as you own your car.

K&N is so sure of the quality of the filter it backs it with a 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty. The promise guarantees that the air filter will perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without requiring replacement.

The construction of the media also ensures excellent airflow. As more and more particles are captured, the airflow is not restricted and continues through permitting the K&N filter to last longer than other filters. Another benefit is the K&N air filter will not void the vehicle warranty and it will work with OEM vehicle electronics.

It is designed to fit into the existing factory air box. Installation is very easy. All you have to do is remove the old used filter and replace it with the K&N filter. The installation takes just a few minutes and you can use common hand tools to do the job.

The K&N 33-5050 air filter fits the following vehicles:

2017 HYUNDAI I30 III 1.6L L4 Diesel Engine - All Models

Team Faith Takes on Round Six of the Amsoil Arenacross Series

Dawson Newby jumps his Team Faith KTM at the Kansas City stop of Arenacross

K&N-sponsored Team Faith is a non-profit outreach ministry that impacts people who are enthusiastic about action sports. The team is involved in a variety of motorsports with the highest profile being Arenacross (AX). The TF racers had an eventful round six of the Amsoil Arenacross Series.

Returning to race after a three year hiatus from Arenacross, Team Faith re-enlisted former team rider Kelly Smith to take on the AX Lites division aboard the #37 machine in place of the injured Dylan Rouse. Smith knows a thing or two about Arenacross and the mission of Team Faith, making him a solid fit for the squad.

The #316 ride of Dawson Newby was also in the house in Kansas City working to get his Team Faith supported KTM ride back into the night show. In only his third race since returning from injury, Newby was eager to measure his recent progress and continue his mission in both the AX and AX Lites classes.

Kelly Smith got the ball rolling for Team Faith inside of the Sprint Center, leading the way through the first AX Lites practice. After just one lap, Smith looked to be fast and comfortable on the #37 KTM 250SX-F.

Smith's return to Arenacross would unfortunately be short lived. Only three laps into practice, Kelly came up short attempting to triple into the technical rhythm section, injuring his back in the process. No stranger to injury, Kelly recognized there was a problem right away and opted to pull out of practice. After leaving the arena to seek medical attention, it was confirmed that Kelly suffered a compression fracture of his L1 and L2 vertebrae. Smith's untimely injury will prematurely derail his return to Arenacross with Team Faith for the 2017 season.

Dawson Newby looked impressive throughout the day, charging through qualifying with confidence and improving his lap times every session. Appearing to be more comfortable on the track with each passing lap, Newby looked much more aggressive this week in his third race back from a serious wrist injury.

On Sunday during amateur competition, Team Faith Road Pastor Lary Dean lined up once again for another weekend of Central Region competition. Looking to secure his spot at the season finale in Las Vegas, Dean was able to do just that. Following his second and fourth place finishes in Kansas City, Lary earned Team Faith a pair of Regional Championships in the 35+ and 40+ class.

Kurt Busch Wins His First Ever Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway

Kurt Busch and Ryan Blaney race during the Daytona 500

Kurt Busch won his first Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday to kick off the NASCAR racing season. Busch’s 29th Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race win was the biggest of his career, and he did it in a very surprising fashion.

“To have the mirror fall off, and it broke on the left hinge, and so the right hinge was still mounted to the upper roll cage. I took my right arm and tried to fix it. Now the mirror is going vertical,” Busch said regarding the quality of his car in the closing minutes. “I couldn't get enough angle in it to see behind me. I could see nobody back there. I said, ‘What would my dad do? What would he teach me to do as a young racer?’”

Busch led the 200-lap race only once, the 200th and the final lap to take the checkered flag. He also won a much-needed 56 points to start the season.

“Daytona's always about survival. As I gave Tony Gibson a high five before we started the race, I said, ‘It's 90% protect the car, 10% go for aggression, race hard, and execute at the end.’ The nose was clean and the tail was clean,” Busch said. “Yeah, the sides were a bit wrinkled up. You just kind of let the rough edges drag and you go for it. Usually there's not a perfect car anymore. I just let the care go to the side when it comes to protect the car, making sure it doesn't have too much damage, because you always want a perfect car to have the most speed at the end.”

Busch’s brother, Kyle Busch, won the first stage of the race before getting into an accident, and was forced to finish the race early. Busch crashed into turn 3 taking out three other drivers, Erik Jones, Matt Kenseth, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the process.

Busch finished in 38th place, and ultimately with 11 points to end the day. Kyle Busch won the first playoff point in the new NASCAR Monster Energy Cup history, as this was the first year of the three-stage race.

Ryan Blaney finished in second place, 0.288 of a second behind Busch after coming all the way from behind the 11-car battle with two laps to go and a lead before losing it. Blaney led once throughout the race, for the last two laps.

“A good showing for us. It was a good way to start off the year. Stinks to be so close. But I think that's good momentum for our team, to be good at the beginning of the day, get some damage and be able to rally for a good finish,” Blaney said.

AJ Allmendinger finished the race in third place and led once for two laps.

“Just solid. We didn't have the best speed outright since we've been here. We put a great effort. The Duels we got a good finish. Unfortunately had the penalty. To come out with a top-five finish, I think this is the first time since I've been with the 47 team we've raced our primary car at the 500. That's a start.” Allmendinger said.

The winner of the second stage, Kevin Harvick, led for 50 of the 200-laps before wrecking his car on Lap 128. Harvick eventually finished in 22nd place and received 42 points.

The new racing format that NASCAR has put together awards the winner of each stage with points. The winners of stages one and two both receive one point, while the winner of the race receives five playoff points.

Kyle Busch gets in a crash which causes four drivers to be eliminated from the race

Going along with a new “playoff point system” is a new time limit for pitstops. A pit crew has five minutes to do any repairs on the car and to refuel before the race starts again.

"Saw a lot of great, hard racing. Everybody knows that every driver wants to win the Daytona 500. We saw drivers up on the wheel all day long, racing hard, and that's exactly what we expected from the format," NASCAR Vice President Steve O’Donnell said regarding the Daytona 500.

Kurt Busch leads the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series standings with 56 and five playoff points. Ryan Blaney is in second place with 44 points. Joey Logano is in third place with 43 points. Kevin Harvick is fourth with 42 points and one playoff point. AJ Allmendinger is in fifth place with 39 points.

The next race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will be at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Folds Of Honor Quicktrip 500.
